Biography

Avigdor Arikha (Dlugach) was born in Bukovina, Romania and grew up in Czernowitz. He attended Hebrew and secular schools. During World War II, his family was deported to a concentration camp in Transnistria. Arikha drawings document life in the camp. In 1944, he immigrated to Palestine with Youth Aliyah, which sent him to Kibbutz Ma'aleh Hahamisha. In 1946, he studied at the New Bezalel School of Art. In 1947, he joined a convoy bringing supplies to besieged Jerusalem and was badly wounded. In 1949, he was awarded a Youth Aliyah scholarship to study art in France. In 1951-1953, he resided in Jerusalem. During this period, he painted abstracts in somber colors and illustrated the writings of Cervantes, Rilke and Hemingway.

In 1952, he settled in France. In the 1960s, he abandoned abstract painting and began to produce works based on direct observation of nature. In addition to portraits, many of his paintings depict his home surroundings. He also wrote scholarly articles about European art, especially Poussin and Ingre, and curated a number of exhibitions on the subject.

Biography

Baruch Agadati (Koshhinski), painter and dancer, born 1895, Bessarabia, Moldova. Immigrated 1910. Returned to Russia during the First World War and took the name Agadati. 1919 Returned to Israel. Worked in theatre and produced the famous Purim Carnival in the 1930s.1936 produced the first Hebrew speaking film This is the Land. Died in 1976.

Lola Beer, Fashion designer, born 1916, Czechoslovakia. A pioneer of high fashion - haute couture - in Israel. Internationally known. Designed clothes for the wives of all Israeli Prime Ministers, for Vera Weizman and for diplomats. Designed uniforms for girl soldiers and El Al, the academic robes of the Weizman Institute and for the theatre, also ready made for the ATA shops.

Tsibi Geva (1954) is a born Israeli artist.

Biography

Tsibi Geva, an Israeli painter and sculpture, was born in 1951, in Kibbutz Ein Shemer, Israel.
In the early 1980's Geva began using motifs and imagery from local Arab culture, while emphasizing racial stereotypes. In an installation he presented at the Kibbutz Gallery in 1982, for example, there were caricature images of un-identified Arabs, alongside the image of a wounded lioness, painted expressively and with heavy impasto. In later works such as "Umm al - Fahm" (1983) or "Jaffa, Arara, Goara, Haifa" (1984), Geva uses "decorative" text which actualizes the existence of the Arab minority in Israel and undermined the concept of Israeli and Westernizes "taste".
After studying art in New York in the late 1980's, the work of Geva featured a series of large-scale abstract paintings, which implemented similar local motifs. A series of Kafiyah paintings, for example, Geva integrated the values of American abstract art, using the kafiyah as a folklore-political motif, as well as an abstract grid. During the 1990's Geva created sculptural elements, such as iron grates, using similar motifs.
Tsibi Geva lives and works in Tel Aviv.

Lea Nikel (1954) is a born Israeli artist.

Biography

Lea Nikel, painter, born 1918, Zhitomir, Ukraine. Lived and worked in Moshav Kidron. Died September 2005. She immigrated to Israel in 1920 and grew up in Tel Aviv. During the years 1950-61 she lived and worked in Paris; 1961-63 and 1964-65 in Ashdod, Israel; 1963-64 in New York; 1964 toured the Central African Republic; 1965-67 in Safed; 1967-70 in Rome; 1970-73 in Tel Aviv; 1973-77 in New York; 1977-80 returned to Tel Aviv. She was nicknamed "queen of abstract painting" and "queen of color and composition" among her Israeli colleagues. Her works are in several museums such as Tate Britain.

Hedwig Grossman Lehmann (1954) is a born Israeli artist.

Biography

Hedwig Grossman Lehmann, pioneering Israeli ceramist and woodcut artist, born in Germany, 1902-1995

Hedwig Grossman (later Lehmann) was born in Berlin, Germany to a secular family of industrialists. In 1919-1925, she worked as a Zionist youth leader for Blau-Weiss. In 1933, she immigrated to the Land of Israel with her sculptor husband Rudi Lehmann, settling in Haifa.

Grossman was one of the first Israeli artists to use local clays and derive inspiration from Arab pottery. In 1935, Grossman established a flower pot factory and ceramic workshop at Kibbutz Yagur. In 1937, the couple moved to Jerusalem. In 1953, she was one of the founders of the Artists' Colony in Ein Hod, where she lived until 1957. In 1959, the couple moved to Givatayim, where they established a municipal art school.

Grossman's ceramic works made use of local Land of Israel materials and natural colors, and show the influence of archaeological findings. In the early 1950s,she began to produce woodcuts.

In 1973, Grossman's book "Terra Cotta" won a special mention in the Israel Museum's International Art Book Competition.

Biography

Lola Beer, Fashion designer, born 1916, Czechoslovakia. A pioneer of high fashion - haute couture - in Israel. Internationally known. Designed clothes for the wives of all Israeli Prime Ministers, for Vera Weizman and for diplomats. Designed uniforms for girl soldiers and El Al, the academic robes of the Weizman Institute and for the theatre, also ready made for the ATA shops.

Anna Ticho (1954) is a born Israeli artist.

Biography

Anna Ticho, Israeli, born Austro-Hungarian Empire, 1894-1980. For her Achievements she had recive the Israel Prize in 1980.

Anna Ticho was born in Brno, Moravia (today Czech Republic) and grew up in Vienna, where she studied art. In June 1912, she moved to Jerusalem to marry her fiancée, Dr. Avraham Ticho, an ophthalmologist. She spent World War I in Damascus with her husband, who was serving as a physician with the Austrian and German armies. In 1924, the couple purchased a home in Jerusalem and set up a private eye clinic where Ticho worked as her husband's assistant.

In Jerusalem, Ticho began to draw landscapes. Her early work was graphic in character, depicting mountains without sky or human figures. From the 1950s, she painted still-lifes in watercolor. In the 1960s, after her husband's death, she branched out into landscapes of other locales in Israel. Her later work is free and expressive.

After her death in 1980, her artwork and home were bequeathed to the Israel Museum . Ticho House is now a gallery featuring a permanent display of her work and changing exhibitions.

Yehiel Shemi (b.Yehiel Stizberg) (1954) is a born Israeli artist.

Biography

Yehiel Shemi, (b.Yehiel Stizberg), sculptor and painter, born 1922, Haifa. 1945-48 was sent as emissary of the Hechalutz movement to the U.S.A. where he became acquainted with modern art and art history. 1955-65 Member of New Horizons Group. Founded and lived in Kibbutz Cabri in the Galil.

Baruch Agadati (Koshhinski), painter and dancer, born 1895, Bessarabia, Moldova. Immigrated 1910. Returned to Russia during the First World War and took the name Agadati. 1919 Returned to Israel. Worked in theatre and produced the famous Purim Carnival in the 1930s.1936 produced the first Hebrew speaking film This is the Land. Died in 1976.

Lola Beer, Fashion designer, born 1916, Czechoslovakia. A pioneer of high fashion - haute couture - in Israel. Internationally known. Designed clothes for the wives of all Israeli Prime Ministers, for Vera Weizman and for diplomats. Designed uniforms for girl soldiers and El Al, the academic robes of the Weizman Institute and for the theatre, also ready made for the ATA shops.

Ruth Schloss (1954) is a born Israeli artist.

Biography

Ruth Schloss, Israeli, born Germany, 1922-2013.

Ruth Schloss was born in 1922, in Nuremberg, Germany. In 1937 Schloss immigrated to the Land of Israel with her family and settled in K'far Shmaryahu. At the end of the 1930's she studied in the "New Bezalel", Jerusalem and was taught by Mordechai Ardon, among others.
During the 1940's Schloss was active in pioneering kibbutz frameworks of "HaShomer HaTzair". In 1943 she joined Kibbutz Merhavia training, and two years later settled in Lehavot HaBashan.
In 1951 she married Binyamin Cohen. Following a political dispute in 1952 they were forced to leave kibbutz Lehavot HaBashan and moved to her parents' farm in Kfar Shmaryahu, where she resides today. Schloss began painting at the studio she opened in Jaffa (1962-1983).
Her early works were mostly ink drawings and watercolor on paper. These drawings have become her trademark. Her paintings were in the style of Socialist Realism, which flourished at the time among Israeli painters such as Shraga Weil and John Simon, who were influenced by the Socialist and Communist movements worldwide. Schloss also illustrated many children's books and issues of the newspapers "Al HaMishmar" and "Mishmar LeYeladim".
Throughout the years, Schloss adhered to figurative painting and to keeping Man at the center of her work. She never abandoned her unique and humane observations of those who are weaker, oppressed, deprived and discriminated against: children, the elderly, women, refugees and animals.
In recent years (until 2012), she painted large works in acrylic on canvas. Her paintings have become more expressive, but they continue to focus on similar topics: old, blindfolded prisoners and animals with exposed teeth.

Worked in theatre and produced the famous Purim Carnival in the 1930s.1936 produced the first Hebrew speaking film This is the Land. Died in 1976.

Peter Merom, photographer and painter, also Silk-Screen Printer and Engraving on Copper, born 1919, Germany.1937 A founder of Kibbutz Hulata. In 1935 bought his first compact camera, self taught photography.Between the years 1940-60 he published 30 albums; his book of photographs of Israel was the first to be printed in Israel.

Rudolf (Rudi) Lehmann (1954) is a born Israeli artist.

Biography

Rudolf (Rudi) Lehmann, Israeli sculptor, 1903-1977, born in Germany

Rudi Lehmann was born in Berlin. In 1917-1922, he studied mechanics and worked as an apprentice for a blacksmith. In 1922-1924, he studied woodcarving and sculpture with sculptor Harold Isenstein. In 1924-1928, he attended the municipal arts and crafts school in Berlin, where he studied sculpture and ceramics. There he met his future wife, Hedwig Grossman. In 1928-1930, he worked for Holzmann's Stone Mason and Carving company. After that, he worked as a freelance stonemason and sculptor at museums around Germany, including the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. He also worked in terra cotta at Hedwig's ceramics workshop and taught at an art school.

In the summer of 1933, Lehmann immigrated to the Land of Israel with his wife and settled in Haifa. They set up a ceramics testing laboratory at the Technion in Haifa and then moved to Kibbutz Yagur in 1935, where they established a factory for flower-pots. In 1937, they opened a sculpture studio in Jerusalem, where Lehmann produced miniature carvings from olive wood, ivory, horn and gemstones that were sold to tourists.

In 1945-1947, Lehmann worked for the Haganah, building models and ballistic implements. In 1947-1948, he was a member of the Jewish Agency's Self-Defense Planning Committee. In 1953, he was one of the founding members of the Ein Hod Artists' Village, where he taught sculpture. In 1959, Lehmann and his wife moved to Givatayim where he established an art school under the auspices of the Givatayim municipality that offered courses in sculpture, woodcuts and ceramics to youth and adults.

Lola Beer, Fashion designer, born 1916, Czechoslovakia. A pioneer of high fashion - haute couture - in Israel. Internationally known. Designed clothes for the wives of all Israeli Prime Ministers, for Vera Weizman and for diplomats. Designed uniforms for girl soldiers and El Al, the academic robes of the Weizman Institute and for the theatre, also ready made for the ATA shops.

Baruch Agadati (Koshhinski), painter and dancer, born 1895, Bessarabia, Moldova. Immigrated 1910. Returned to Russia during the First World War and took the name Agadati. 1919 Returned to Israel. Worked in theatre and produced the famous Purim Carnival in the 1930s.1936 produced the first Hebrew speaking film This is the Land. Died in 1976.

Yair Garbuz (1954) is a born Israeli artist.

Biography

Yair Garbuz, Israeli, multimedia artist, author and filmmaker, born 1945

Yair Barbuz was born in Givatayim. In the 1960s, after serving in the Israel Defense Forces, he studied painting at the Avni Institute and took private lessons with Israeli artist Raffi Lavie. He was active in the +Ten group. In 1974-1986, he created video art using techniques similar to collage, and wrote texts in the same style. In 1983-2004, he was one of the authors of a newspaper column, Davar Akher. In 1993, he hosted a satiric television show, "Ein im me ledaber" (No one to talk to), and wrote scripts for a current events program, Tik Tikshoret.

Garbuz's early work, in the 1960s, combined photographic collage and scribbles to create expressive figurative portraits and grotesque nudes. From the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, he made ironic use of characters from Zionist propaganda and incorporated texts in his compositions. Later, he returned to more traditional painting and created collages referencing the history of Israeli art.

Lola Beer, Fashion designer, born 1916, Czechoslovakia. A pioneer of high fashion - haute couture - in Israel. Internationally known. Designed clothes for the wives of all Israeli Prime Ministers, for Vera Weizman and for diplomats. Designed uniforms for girl soldiers and El Al, the academic robes of the Weizman Institute and for the theatre, also ready made for the ATA shops.

Assem Abu Shakra (1954) is a born Israeli artist.

Biography

Assam Abu Shakra, Israeli, 1961-1990

Assam Abu Shakra was born in Umm el-Fahm. His brother was Sheikh Raid Salah. Several members of the family are artists. He attended a Jewish high school in Afula. In 1981, he moved to Tel Aviv-Yafo and studied at the Kalisher Art School, washing dishes to pay his bills. In his second year of studies, he lived and painted in a room at the school, living on scholarships awarded by the school.

After graduating in 1986, he worked for a printing company, eventually becoming a teaching assistant and a drawing instructor at Kalisher. In 1987, he met Eitan Hillel, a curator and gallery owner, who organized showings of his work. With Hillel's help, he began to work at a studio on Nahmani Street in Tel Aviv-Yafo. In 1987, he was diagnosed with cancer, to which he succumbed in 1990. Abu Shakra's palette is dominated by different shades of ochre. Most of his work features a central image set against a decorative background. Aside from numerous self-portraits, a recurrent motif in his work is the sabra cactus, depicted as a domesticated house-plant symbolizing personal and national identity.

Lola Beer (1954) is a South-African born Israeli artist.

Biography

Lola Beer, Fashion designer, born 1916, Czechoslovakia. A pioneer of high fashion - haute couture - in Israel. Internationally known. Designed clothes for the wives of all Israeli Prime Ministers, for Vera Weizman and for diplomats. Designed uniforms for girl soldiers and El Al, the academic robes of the Weizman Institute and for the theatre, also ready made for the ATA shops.
