Range, Habitat and Species Status: The Crimson-collared Grosbeak is a species endemic to Mexico. It's normal range is in Mexico. However, it occasionally strays north to southern Texas in the lower Rio Grande Valley. When it does stray, it is mostly found in the U.S.A. in winter.

Plumage and Identification: The Crimson-collared Grosbeak ADULT MALE has a large, heavy, dark gray bill like most grosbeaks of that family ( Cardinalidae ). It also has a black mask that extends from past the forehead down to the throat. The nape, neck and breast down are a deep red. The wings are black with some small, thin, dark red wing bars. The back where the folded wings don't cover is a deep purple - alsmost black. Its tail is either a very dark purple or black and the legs and feet are completely black. The Crimson-collared Grosbeak ADULT FEMALE also has the same size black mask, then a dull green all over.

Song: Song is a bunch of varying warbles mixed together.

Call: Call is a rising and fallinf "seeyu."
