I'm a retired librarian and the head of my local historical society in Brookline, Massachusetts. I blog about Brookline history and contribute to Brookline- and Boston-related articles. I also blog about etymology and contribute to articles about word and phrase origins. My etymological explorations often lead me to interesting people in different fields and I have created or added to biographies of some of these people.
Articles I have created from scratch include:
- Frances Taylor, music and film critic and lyricist
- Richard Slater Jennings, journalist, artists, and creator of jazz album covers
- Frank J. Wilstach, theatrical agent, writer, and compiler of A Dictionary of Similes
Other articles I have added significant content to include:
- Jungle juice (etymology section)
- First responder (etymology section)
- Representative town meeting (history)
- Single-stream recycling (history)
- Ariel (American automobile)
- Triple Crown (added info on changing meaning of term "Pitching Triple Crown")
- Brehon B. Somervell (added information about Somervell's relations with unions and left-wing groups and with the WPA arts program in NYC )
- Irazu Volcano (Corrected date eruption began to before Kennedy's arrival rather than the same day he arrived.)
- George Wright (Added info about Wright's role in a baseball demonstration at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm)
Here are other topics I work on:
- Jazz
- Baseball
- Architecture
I also work on "Citation needed" entries in these and other topics.
