History
[edit]The Sagem Era
[edit]In 1991, Sagem manufactured decoders for Canal+, the first French pay-TV channel.[1]
In 1996, Sagem launched the Phonefax, a fax machine for the mass market. The following year, Sagem's satellite decoder enabled TPS, a television operator, to launch the first satellite TV package in France.[2]
Sagemcom originated from Sagem's telecommunications division, which merged with Snecma in 2005 to form the Safran Group. These activities were later organized under Sagem Telecommunications alongside Sagem Mobiles.[N 1]
Sale of Sagem Communications
[edit]In 2008, following an LMBO transaction, Safran sold Sagem Communications to The Gores Group. The group was majority-owned by the investment fund, alongside its employees.
In July 2009, Sagem Communications acquired the broadband and WiMAX business of Gigaset Communications, a subsidiary of ARQUES Industries and Siemens.
Sagemcom
[edit]In 2010, Sagem Communications became Sagemcom and reorganized into three main divisions: Sagemcom Documents, Sagemcom Broadband, and Sagemcom Energy & Telecom. That year, its urban traffic systems, including traffic lights, were sold to Aximum (a subsidiary of Colas).[3]
In February 2011, Sagemcom announced a partnership between its customer service subsidiary TR2S and Cordon Electronics, a French group specializing in communication product repairs. By July 2012, Cordon Electronics fully acquired TR2S.
In August 2011, Carlyle Group became the majority shareholder (70%), while employee ownership increased to 30%.[4][5]
In October 2016, Carlyle Group sold its shares to Charterhouse Capital Partners LLP.[6]
In 2017, Sagemcom strengthened its energy sector presence with the acquisition of Meter Italia. In 2018, it acquired a 20% stake in Otodo, a startup specializing in smart home solutions.
On January 14, 2020, Sagemcom unveiled a new Wi-Fi 6 box for Bouygues Telecom.[7]
