Plunet BusinessManager is a commercial, web-based translation management system developed by the German software company Plunet GmbH. Plunet allows the centralized planning, controlling, and monitoring of translation, interpreting,[2] and localization projects. Translation agencies, internal language departments of industrial enterprises and service providers, government offices, NGOs and institutions use Plunet BusinessManager for workflow and project control purposes.[3] The software solution offers a number of interfaces to industry-relevant third-party software systems (CAT, accounting, project management), while an API and various modules allow flexible expansion and scalable integration into company-specific system landscapes.[4]

Basic functions include quote, order, and billing management, job and workflow management, controlling, quality management, productivity and financial reports, as well as deadline, document, and partner management.[5] The Plunet GUI is currently available in several languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Spanish.[4]

Plunet BusinessManager is a certified IT project management tool (PMT) in accordance with EN 15038:2006-08-01, ISO 9001:2008, and the future standard ISO 17100, and enables translation service providers to seamlessly implement all process requirements contained therein.[6]

Plunet BusinessManager is currently being developed and marketed by Plunet GmbH in Berlin and Würzburg, and by Plunet Inc. in New York City.[7]

History

2003: Plunet is founded in Würzburg, Germany.[8]

2009: Plunet becomes a registered trademark in the US and Europe.[9]

2012: According to a study commissioned by the Association of Language Companies (a leading US association of language service providers), Plunet BusinessManager is the most used management system among association members.[10]

2013: Plunet BusinessManager is certified in accordance with the quality standards EN 15038:2006-08 and ISO 9001:2008.[11]

Users

Plunet BusinessManager is mostly used by members of the localization and translation industry. Plunet users include project managers, managing directors, translators, interpreters, account managers, and controllers in language service departments in internationally active institutions and enterprises, as well as localization and translation service providers. Plunet BusinessManager is currently used by around 30,000 users in roughly 40 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America.[10]

Technology

Plunet BusinessManager builds on the commonly used web technologies Java, HTML, JavaScript, GWT, and Ajax. The HTTP or the encrypted HTTPS protocol are used for all data transfer, which makes Plunet accessible via all commonly used web browsers. Plunet is run on a Tomcat server of the Apache Software Foundation.[1] Plunet uses the open source system MySQL for data management. Alternatively, MS SQL can be utilized for the same purpose. This translation management system furthermore allows the hosting of project data on separate servers, independent of the database. Plunet is multilingual and has a multitenant architecture. Authorizations and access rights are managed via user groups.[1] Plunet BusinessManager is available as a standalone system or a SaaS solution.[12]

Plunet API

Plunet API allows the creation of user-defined dynamic solutions in the programming languages PHP, .NET, and JAVA. It models the entire workflow from initial requests to quotes, orders, and jobs, right down to final invoicing, and provides modular solutions for the customization of individual areas, which can be tailored to varying user-specific workflow requirements.[13]
