Martha Araújo

[edit]Martha Araújo (born 1943) in Maceió, Brazil is a Brazilian artist.[1] Araujo is currently about seventy-six years old. She lives and works in Maceió. She study education and graduated from two universities in her city one being Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and the other being Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. Maceió is a city in Brazil that has nothing to do with the art industry. She also worked under a sculptor name Haroldo Barroso at the Museu do Ingá in Niterói. The style of her work was performance and sculpture art. Her art emerged at the end of a long dictatorship she used their experiences in her art works.[2] Using textile Araújo demonstrates the limit of the body through the play between repression and freedom. However sculptures and performances where not her only interest she was also exploring photography and video.
Education
[edit]Martha Araújo studied education at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and graduated in the year of 1970. She earned a degree in pedagogy at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. She was able to earned her masters degree in education from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. She was able to work under Haroldo Barroso a sculptor at the Museu do Ingá in Niereó throughout 1984 and 1987. In the year of 1986 she went on to study at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro.

[edit]Martha Araújo,Hábito/Habitante (Habit/inhabitant),1985 Hábito/Habitante is a performance piece that uses a textile,wood and velcro. She is trying to get free so she is moving to release herself from the wall.There are diffrent versionsos of Hábito/Habitante. This performances are done by the artist, actors and dancers.They are in side a piece textile and are moving around to free them self from repression.
Quardo Dobravel Espaco Real,1985 Quardo Dobravel Espaco Real are metal plates stitches together that can moved to create new art. Depending on the movement its the shape it will take in.
Para um corpo nas suas impossibilidades, 1985 In this art piece she uses a ramp,a body suit with velcro, and herself to stick herself or others to show how they feel free. They jump onto the ramp and are stuck there experiencing repression and freedom because once your stuck its hard to unstuck yourself until you fight for freedom.

[edit]In 1986 Araújo was granted an award at the tenth Solão Carioca de Artes in Rio de Janeiro.[12]
