Worcester College Boat Club (commonly abbreviated to WCBC) is a rowing club for members of Worcester College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford.
History
[edit]Worcester College Boat Club first took part in bumps racing in 1825, as one of the first five colleges to do so (the others were Jesus, Brasenose (B.N.C.), Christchurch (Ch.Ch.) and Exeter), though a Worcester man had previously raced as a guest in the first ever race. The race of 1825 was in fact the first to be raced on the present principles, each crew starting in an order above Iffley lock (in early races, with perhaps only two or three crews all began inside the lock) with the aim to bump up the order over successive nights; racing over three nights, they bumped Exeter on the second, but Exeter took their revenge on the third.
Worcester is not seen racing again until 1830; starting 6th, but rose to 4th when St. John’s and Univ. failed to turn up on the fourth day (and thus demoted to the bottom of the division).
In 1831 we start 3rd (B.N.C. a no-show) but are savaged on the 2nd day by Exeter, which went from 5th to 2nd. Next year we lost another place to a rampaging Queen’s crew, who went from 7th to 2nd. After a year off, in 1834 Worcester emerges to take out Exeter (1st day), Jesus (3rd day) and Queen’s (4th day) to finish by the end of the 5th day in 2nd position behind Ch. Ch., probably the highest Worcester has ever been in Summer Eights.
Results
