The Libyan Technology Foundation is a non-profit organization established with the objectives of raising technical awareness, supporting the development of the telecommunications and information technology sector in Libya, and driving the digital transformation of both institutions and society. It seeks to achieve this by utilizing all available local resources, Libyan competencies, and expertise to build a better society and empower the Libyan citizen to benefit from modern and evolving digital services, in line with the rapid technological developments worldwide.
The Libyan Technology Foundation was established on August 25, 2020, as a civil society organization concerned with spreading technical knowledge and facilitating access to technology. The foundation is known for its contributions to developing technical legislation and fostering cooperation between the technical community and the public, as well as governments, private companies, and government institutions.
Since its inception, the foundation has contributed to the development of digital legislation, and it prepared the general policy for email use by Libyan institutions, which in turn helps enhance effective digital communication in Libya and provides a safe and trusted environment for data and information exchange. As part of the regulatory framework, the foundation also prepared a guide and regulations for social media use by government institutions in collaboration with the Government Communication Center.
In its efforts to develop and support youth and organize events, the Government of National Unity declared June 1st each year as a national day to celebrate information technology after a proposal from the Libya Technology Foundation (formerly the Libyan Organization for Information and Communications Technology). The foundation organizes this event across all regions of Libya.
To support youth and spread knowledge, the foundation offers professional training for graduates in information technology and engineering fields. It also collaborates with ISOC - Libya Chapter to organize monthly sessions under the "Spaces" project to discuss Libyan internet issues, share opinions, and spread knowledge.
The foundation has assisted more than 30 civil society organizations by providing Microsoft 365 for Business services for NGOs, offering training, and familiarizing them with the Microsoft 365 work environment. Any civil society organization can access these services by contacting Microsoft through the provided link.
As part of its work to improve the performance of Libyan institutions, the foundation recently announced that it had developed an acceptable use policy for Microsoft 365 programs to enable Libyan institutions to maximize the benefits of Microsoft 365 technologies in a secure and effective manner.
As a non-profit organization operating within civil society, and to strengthen its ability to achieve its goals, the foundation relies on various funding sources. In terms of sustainability, the Libya Technology Foundation generates revenue by providing paid services to various government and private entities, including advanced technical and administrative consultations and training programs. It also relies on both conditional and unconditional government and private sector support.
The foundation's work is also focused on information security, both technically and legislatively. In this regard, the Libya Technology Foundation has received the Information Security Compliance Certification from the General Authority for Information Security and Safety.
