From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of people executed in Mississippi before 1972. The state's earliest recorded executions took place on February 8, 1804; the state's death penalty remained active until a nationwide moratorium stalled the death penalty in the state in 1972, although Mississippi's last execution before the moratorium's official start took place in 1964. Between 1804 and 1964, at least 351 legal executions took place in Mississippi.

Electric chair and gas chamber executions in Mississippi, 1940–1964

[edit]

In 1940, Mississippi's state legislature approved the adoption of a portable electric chair; unlike electric chairs in other states, which were stationary and resided within centralized locations in state prisons, Mississippi's electric chair was the first of two (with the other being in Louisiana) to be temporarily moved within the county where a condemned inmate was condemned and stationed within the county's courthouse or local jail. At least approximately 75 executions took place in Mississippi by portable electric chair before the state retired their electric chair and adopted the gas chamber as their new method of execution, which they used in 31 executions between 1955 and 1964.

The exact number of executions in Mississippi's portable electric chair is unclear, as different sources provide different numbers between 75 and 96.[b]

Information is sourced from the Espy Files and the Mississippi Department of Corrections unless otherwise specified.[1][13]

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^ Tinsley's death sentence was apparently only applicable to the murder of Harris.
  2. ^ One article published in 1954, the year Mississippi replaced the electric chair with the gas chamber, states that Mississippi's portable electric chair was utilized in 96 executions.[10] Another 1954 article states that there were 84 electrocutions.[11] The Mississippi Department of Corrections says the state used the electric chair in 75 executions.[12]
  3. ^ Sutton's execution took place on the same day as Green's, albeit seven hours later, and in a different county.
  4. ^ Newsome was overall convicted of at least 5 rapes and 50 robberies and seems to have incurred a death sentence for more than one conviction.
  5. ^ Willis's crime took place in Coahoma County; however, his attorneys secured a change of venue to Warren County, where he was convicted. His execution took place in Warren County as well.
