The Sensational Alex Harvey Band was a Scottish rock band that was known for its eclecticism and energetic live performances.[1][unreliable source?] A number of their albums charted and they had hit singles with covers of "Delilah" and "Gamblin' Bar Room Blues", as well as their own song, "Boston Tea Party".[2]
Biography
[edit]In 1972, Alex Harvey formed The Sensational Alex Harvey Band with the members of progressive rock act Tear Gas, which consisted of guitarist Zal Cleminson, bassist Chris Glen, and cousins Ted and Hugh McKenna, on drums and keyboards respectively.
The band had hits in Britain, with the single "Delilah", a song made popular by Tom Jones, reaching number 7 in 1975, and also with "The Boston Tea Party" in June of 1976. After Harvey left the group later that year, the other members continued as "SAHB (without Alex)" and released one album. Harvey returned to the fold for 1978's Rock Drill but the group disbanded shortly afterwards. Harvey passed away in 1982 due to a heart attack.
In 2004, the band reformed and released a live album in 2006. Cleminson left the band in 2008. Julian Hutson Saxby played live with SAHB and was later announced as a permanent replacement. The band currently consists of Hugh and Ted McKenna, Chris Glen, "Mad" Max Maxwell, and Julian Hutson-Saxby.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band was voted the fifth greatest Scottish band of all time in a 2005 BBC survey.[3]
