Sofia Boutella[A] (born on April 3, 1982 in Bab El Oued, Algiers, Algeria) is an Algerian dancer, actress, model and musician. As a dancer, she toured with Madonna and featured in Nike's Women Advertising campaigns; as an actress, she landed parts in Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond and 'The Mummy'.

Life and career

Early life (1982–2000)

We were always in nature. In our family home we had a big, dishevelled garden, with deer, dogs, chickens and cats. There was a rundown old carriage that we would pretend had horses attached to it. I grew up in a very beautiful way, in a family that always encouraged me, and my calling to be artistic. We were raised to be open-minded, creative, to use our imaginations.

Sofia Boutella was born on April 3, 1982, in Bab El Oued district of Algiers – the capital city of Algeria.[1] She is the daughter of music composer Safy Boutella and an architect mother.[1][2] She raised in her family home, with her family encouraging her to be artistic.[1] At the age of five, she begins her classical dance education.[3] At the age of ten, and following the Algerian Civil War, she and her family leave Algeria and move to France; a move she credits for furnishing her with an early ease of adaptability, alongside a visceral connection to her roots.[1][3] "I feel very worldly. But leaving a place like that when you're so young doesn't come without missing a sense of identity and belonging to one place. […] But I feel Algerian, I'm proud to be Algerian and I carry that with me wherever I go," she says.[1] In Paris, she starts rhythmic gymnastics, earning herself a spot in the French team for the Olympics at age 18.[3] Sport becomes very important to her, she also takes up swimming and begins at age 17 her education at a sports academy. She does her graduation from Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts, U.S.

Career beginnings and breakthrough (2000–2006)

Having a striking strength and flexibility, Boutella gets interested in breakdance since her teenager years. While performing a freestyle dance session in Los Angeles, U.S., Boutella attracts the attention of Spanish choreographer Blanca Li, who recruits her for his film The Challenge (2002), and she lands her first role as Samia, a girlfriend of David. The film is a musical comedy, inspired by the great American tradition and is set in today's world of France's hip hop movement. She then appears on the television series Les Cordier, juge et flic (2004) and does two more films: Permis d’aimer (2005) and Azur & Asmar: The Princes' Quest (2006, voice-over).

After joining the 'Vagabonds Crew' and then its spin-off team called 'Chienne de Vie and Aphrodites', Boutella's dance career takes a high spin in 2006 as she wins the Battle of the Year (Saint-Denis). She receives fame through 2005 Nike Women's Advertising campaign Take Sport, Add Music, a one minute during commercial that is entirely dedicated to her. In this compaign targeting young European women, she demonstrates a fusion of breakdance, hip hop and freestyle, and succeeds to convince people of her talent. She joins up with choreographer Jamie King who mentors her in Nike's next two commercials: Nike Rockstar Workout and Gear Up & Dance (2006), as a role model of femininity and hip hop.[4] Boutella's popularity is higher than ever, as she travels trough Europe with the Rockstar Workout.

Music videos and touring (2006–2011)

King introduces Boutella to Madonna, and she gets roles in her next two music videos: "Hung Up" (2005) and "Sorry" (2006). From May 21 to September 21, 2006, she gets to travel around the world with Madonna's Confessions Tour. As part of the crew, she takes part of Madonna for H&M compaign, appearing on billboards all over the world for this international clothing brand. She later revealed in an interview with Access Hollywood that Madonna "taught her so much".[5] In 2007, Nike dedicates an exclusive six-episode biography titled You Are Your Own Limit. Every month, the audience is treated to a clip where Boutella reveals an episode of her life, sharing her favorite spots while introducing her family and friends. In 2009, she auditions for a spot in Michael Jackson's This Is It! residency show, and succeeds to convince him to hire her for his series of 50 concerts to be held at The O2 Arena in London, U.K. But unfortunately, Boutella is still under contract for Madonna's Confessions Tour which is travelling through Europe, and she can't get out of it, ultimately missing out on the experience.[B] In 2011, she pays homage to Jackson in his posthumous video "Hollywood Tonight", which paints the story of a young, ambitious girl trying to make it in Hollywood without being swallowed by its trappings and illusions.

Rise to prominence (2011–present)

In 2011, Boutella lands herself a film role in the sequel to U.K. box office dance smash StreetDance 2, which would be released a year later. She stars as Eva, a salsa dancer. In 2015, she was cast as an alien scavenger called Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond, a film directed by Justin Lin and released in July 2016.[6] In 2017, she portrayed the character of the ancient Egyptian princess Ahmanet, whose ambitions of ruling are put aside in favor of a male heir, as the title role in The Mummy.[7][1] The film, which is the first official installment in the Dark Universe franchise, proved her most significant entrée.[1] In June 2017, she joins the cast of Fahrenheit 451, an upcoming television film on HBO directed by Ramin Bahrani.[8] Boutella appears on the September 2017 issue of Asif Magazine.

Artistry

It came about for me because I was sort of rebelling against all the rules. I was a teenager and I’d done ballet and gymnastics and everything was so strict and disciplined that I wanted a sense of freedom. I wanted to be left alone to dance freely, to dance the way that I felt and the way that I wanted. So I went and explored and came across some breakdancers and freestylers one day and it just spoke to me. There are no rules to it.

Boutella describes her dancing as intuitive, not planned.[1] "I’m extremely sensitive and I’m driven by what I feel in my heart,” which is what makes her performances mesmerising.[1]

Personal life

Religion didn't play a big role in Boutella's childhood, and her parents weren't particularly strict but they did place value on manners. "Being polite was very important, having manners and respecting other people," she says.[1]
