Auto-inclusion in category Wikipedians in Surrey

[edit]

I've added an article one-line note saying userpages displaying this template are automatically included in the category "Wikipedians in Surrey", for useful guidance/clarity. I noticed the auto-inclusion some time after copying the template into my own user page, when studying the automated categories listing on the user page bottom sometime later. It's fine to find myself included (i.e. listed) on the category page, but I couldn't understand how it had come about. Then I found an article note on the Template:User_Somerset page stating auto-inclusion etc, and thus added the same to this Surrey page. This type of one-line note about "users automatically included in x/y category" should be added to all such user templates wherever the auto-inclusion occurs. I must have read at least two dozen help pages etc trying to figure why I was included, but found no reference or guidance, till I found the useful "Somerset" example and studied its coding. But if a user is told upfront on the template page, then a) they'd understand immediately how/why auto-inclusion occurs, b) they'd gain a little extra insight into the complex world of categorisations, and c) they'd be saved a lot of time trying to find help that didn't exist! Perhaps someone can create a user article or helppage section recommending that category auto-inclusions be always accompanied by a public one-line explanation. Maybe in (or linked to) the Help:Template#Noinclude, includeonly, and onlyinclude page? Pete Hobbs (talk) 07:38, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
