Asterisk -vs- pound sign

[edit]

Hi Pharos. I signed-in to a Meetup with this button and it put a bullet point next to my name instead of a numeral, so I came here and changed it from an asterisk to a pound sign. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 10:17, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, a technical limitation is that there is a line skipped before every signature — this means a pound sign in that format would only generate a confusing series of #1s (#1. Alice, #1. Bob, #1. Jane), so I think it's better for the auto-generated format to be just with the asterisk, and it can be edited by hand later.--Pharos (talk) 11:49, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Checkingfax and Pharos: Yes, changing it to a pound sign has made it so every signature has to be followed up by someone to remove the line break. I don't know of a good way to avoid that, but I'm reluctant to just boldly change it back because people have started using it this way now (so we would have some combined numbered/bulletpoint lists). Ideas? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 01:09, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Rhododendrites and Pharos. We have all kind of gotten used to signing up on lists by using a pound sign in edit-source mode. But I guess the sign-in button is good for folks on VisualEditor. Sorry about mucking things up. The whole list was numerical then mine was a bullet point. You're right, on my way to the meet-up I tested it a couple of times and it put me down as 1., and 1. again. I did not have time to troubleshoot it. Any ideas? Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 12:58, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What for?

I have a vague idea as to the purpose of these three Meetupsig templates, but their talk pages should all link to whatever instructions we may have. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:36, 8 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
