Colors

  • The usual color of reflection nebulae is blue [1], so use a blue infobox
  • The usual color of emission nebuale is pink [2] so use pinkish infobox
    • HII regions are pink [3]
  • HI regions are radio nebulae [4]

Central star characteristics

@Netoholic, StringTheory11, and Frietjes:

Weidmann et al. (2020) have compiled a catalogue of central stars for 620 planetary nebulae (< 20% of known planetary nebulae).[1] Data files available at http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/cat/J/A+A/640/A10 ("FTP" tab) list the following characteristics:

  1. equatorial coordinates (don't always match the nebula center);
  2. spectral type, with bibcode reference;
  3. second spectral type, with bibcode reference (listed if there is a large discrepancy between the most current spectral type and an older one);
  4. logarithm of surface gravity in cm/s2, with bibcode reference (listed for 56.3% of stars);
  5. logarithm of temperature in K and method by which temperature was determined, with bibcode reference (listed for 69.8% of stars);
  6. logarithm of luminosity in L, with bibcode reference (listed for 60.5% of stars);
  7. apparent magnitude and filter band, with bibcode reference (listed for 74.4% of stars).

I propose that we expand {{infobox nebula}} with a new section "Central star" containing the following parameters (all optional):

  1. |cs_name=;
  2. |cs_ascension=,
  3. |cs_declination= — these two only need to be filled in if different from the nebula center;
  4. |cs_magnitude= — apparent magnitude;
  5. |cs_magnitude_band= — filter band letter for apparent magnitude (displayed in the label);
  6. |cs_spectral= — may list multiple types separated by commas in case there is disagreement between sources (but should not list the spectral type of a companion star);
  7. |cs_luminosity= — in L;
  8. |cs_temperature= — in K;
  9. |cs_surface_grav= — log10 of cm/s2.

2nd concern, UnladenSwallow, if Weidmann et al. (2020) are the source identifying specific stars as central to these nebulae, I'm thinking Weidmann needs to be added as a citation to that fact within the infobox. Maybe within the new cs_name input? -- Netoholic @ 01:54, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Galactic coordinates

Issue with distance parameters

The dist_ly and dist_pc parameters should be reconsidered as they don't allow for values in kly or kpc (1400 ly and 1.4 kly are not the same thing) and are also leading to formatting errors in multiple articles. ReconFX (talk) 18:38, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
