Template:NASTRO comment/doc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Description

[edit]

This template manages the plethora of redirect pages of small Solar System bodies. For redirects of cometary and minor planet objects, it is mandatory to use NASTRO comment on the page (usage of correct parameters described below).

Features

[edit]

The template's features include (the outcome depends on the chosen parameters):

 • Displaying a message or a warning directly on the page
 • Adding a specific redirect category (see below)
 • Adding template wikidata redirect
 • Adding a set of templates, such as R to list entry, when redirecting to an anchored list

Examples

[edit]

Primary redirect for minor planet 57658 Nilrem

#REDIRECT List of minor planets: 57001–58000#658

NASTRO comment

Non-primary redirect for minor planet (57658) 2001 UJ1. This is the former designation of 57658 Nilrem (above), before it was named.

#REDIRECT List of minor planets: 57001–58000#658

As shown in the second example, custom R-templates should be added with Redirect category shell above NASTRO comment, maintaining the blank line. Also, for redirects on comets, an additional parameter |type=comet is needed (see § Comets).

Usage

[edit]
 • NASTRO comment, used for primary redirects (i.e. pages with titles suited to be turned into an article if the object becomes notable one day), produces the following default message to caution editors before they begin writing an article. It links to WP:NASTRO § Dealing with minor planets for more contextual details.
 • , used for non-primary redirects (i.e. pages not suited to become an article), replaces the default message with:
Use the "do-not-cat" parameter for non-primary redirects. They are typically tagged with "alternative (former) name", "incorrect spelling", "non-diacritical version", or "avoided double redirect". They should not be turned into articles as the title has been superseded. They never contain any categories.

Redirects to anchored list (R-templates)

[edit]

In most cases, a redirect points to an anchored list entry. Therefore NASTRO comment displays three R-templates by default:

In many cases, however, a redirect does not point to a list but to an existing article instead, the above R-templates need to be turned off using |r-templates=off. See 61 Danae for an example.

Wikidata redirect template

[edit]

Template wikidata redirect is automatically added by default. In case auto detection does not work, use parameter |wikidata-r= with Wikidata's corresponding Q-number without the Q-prefix as value:

Comets

[edit]

For cometary redirects, use .

Redirect categories

[edit]

Depending on the chosen parameters, redirect pages using this template are automatically listed in one of the following categories:

Category:Minor planet object redirects (numbered) NASTRO comment, default, no parameter. 27000 items
Category:Minor planet object redirects (unnumbered) 60 items
Category:Minor planet object redirects (non-primary) 9170 items
Category:Cometary object redirects (primary)‎ 320 items
Category:Cometary object redirects (non-primary) 405 items

Tracking categories

[edit]

Primary designations missing a wikidata QID are tracked via Category:Minor planet object redirects missing QID (1,352).
