China does not allow dual citizenship. Chinese citizenship is automatically revoked when persons from mainland China who reside abroad voluntarily acquire a foreign nationality.[1] Therefore, it would be impossible for Yao Ming to be both a Chinese citizen and a US citizen.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Guanshi Li (talk • contribs) 04:56, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It seems the source cited for his American citizenship only says his name appears on some list online. It's not saying that it is necessarily true, and a smoewhat extraordinary claim like this should be backed by a few other reliable sources. I'll remove it.—Bagumba (talk) 07:28, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Officially according to China that's true, but it's difficult to enforce and gotten around by people when other countries are willing to grant citizenship to Chinese nationals without requiring that they surrender their previous citizenship. U.S. naturalization only requires a symbolic renunciation of previous loyalties and does not require proof of actual renunciation, and China does not necessarily know which of its citizens by birth have been naturalized in other countries and carry other passports. In practice, China's statement that it does not recognize dual nationality simply means that if someone is a Chinese citizen then China will treat them as only a Chinese citizen -- if, for example, they were imprisoned in China and some other country where they have citizenship tried to intervene, China would not recognize their other nationality.
