Whaling station remains

[edit]

Hi. I have yet to find any support in primary sources (old logbooks, journals, newspapers) for a whaling station having been built on the island. A number of tourist sites and traveler's blogs claim an American whaling station was built at the head of Yakshin Bay. These show photos of a steam engine allegedly used for the processing of whale blubber into oil (they used iron cauldrons set in brick furnaces for that) and a "meat grinder" (even though 19th century American open-boat whalers would not have had any use for such things as they only utilized the blubber, baleen, and tongue).
