pro hac vice
[edit]This practice may be compared to attorneys appearing before a court pro hac vice, when they are not members of a particular court's bar.
I don't know if this is really appropriate, or an apt comparison at all. In the U.S. federal courts, pro hac vice status is routinely granted upon payment of a fee and support by a local attorney, as long as the applying attorney is a member of the bar somewhere. But sitting by designation is different, and goes through the Chief Justice of the United States [Supreme Court]. But I don't have a great understanding of what fraction of by designation applications are rejected, so maybe it really is just as routine as pro hac vice admission? jhawkinson (talk) 07:22, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
