Merge (2010) proposal with Videophone article

It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with Videotelephone.

• Object: This proposal should not be implemented. The videophone article describes only a single technology: a phone with video used to communicate with another videophone. Videotelephony describes several technologies related to the various forms of communication that also use video. The videophone is thus only a subset of videotelephony. Revert (2012) improper cut-and-paste addition from Videophone

An editor previously made an improper cut and paste addition to this article, from the text from the related article on Videophone, which only partially concerns this topic. This was wrong on several accounts, for one: since cut and paste moves broke the chain of attribution, it was a clear copyright violation and thus prohibited by Wikipedia's MOS. If an editor feels that two articles should be combined, that person should start a discussion on both article talk pages as per Wikipedia:Merging, in order to gain consensus for the merger. However I feel the two articles should remain separate since Videophone has a rich and lengthy history largely distinct from modern videoconferencing. Videotelephony covers the wide gamut of technologies from webcams to high definition telepresence. Combining all these technologies together would be like merging the article on the Ford Model T with the article on Automobile; by cramming everything into one page you loose the distinctions between the two topics and do a disservice to both of them. It's not a copyright violation; people are generally supposed to leave a link to the old article in the edit summary, and Template:Merged-from is specifically available for this situation. Awkward distinctions and proposed rearrangement

Especially with software like Skype and Google Hangouts, in many cases there is no longer any distinction between a videophone and a videoconferencing system. (See List of video telecommunication services and product brands.) Much of the coverage in the encyclopedia could be talking about either, including impact and history. I think Videoconferencing and Videophone should be merged into Videotelephony. Most of Videophone actually belongs in History of videotelephony, which is largely an empty list of links to other articles where its content has been misplaced. -- Beland (talk) 18:43, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

This is done, though the result is a bit rough. In particular, though I eliminated many paragraphs which were exact duplicates from different articles, the remaining content is still somewhat repetitive in places and often overly wordy. Fixing that and perhaps pushing some details into the linked articles should make for a comfortable reading length. -- Beland (talk) 06:55, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Environmental benefits?

I had heard that telecommunication is actually increasing demand for travel, since people now have more intense but distant social contacts, and more often want to go visit them than they otherwise would have. I'm wondering if that's not true, or if this article simply has an imbalance of sources. -- Beland (talk) 15:52, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Telecommunication isn't only videotelephony. I've removed the tag. It's pointless now anyway, since it was only found at the beginning of a section with links to articles. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 14:46, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

WebRTC does not necessarily need a Browser

I am just developing an application that uses the WebRTC protocol and I have no problem (not counting corporate firewalls) in connecting between say an Android-application and a Windows-PC-application. I feel it would make more sense if this article was moved to the page "videoconferencing". From my experience at least, "videoconferencing" is a more common term that "videotelephony" Farleigheditor (talk) 17:07, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
