Shorten/Split article
[edit]Split I propose shortening the article, and making it a collector of articles about each individual sports, many of which have already been created.--Jax 0677 (talk) 18:31, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- Traditionally, the country articles of MSEs have been made and updated as this one has, but I understand that these articles tend to get long for nations with many athletes involved. How exactly do you propose to shorten the article? And can you please clarify what you mean when you say "a collector of articles?" Thanks. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 06:38, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
- Split the article into 40 sections, many which already exist with "Main|___" templates?--Jax 0677 (talk) 06:42, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
- Sections as in different articles, or...? The {{Main}} templates refer to the pages of the competition overall, while the entries on this article refer specifically to the American athletes in that competition. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 06:47, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
- I don't agree with splitting up the article, as Prayerfortheworld said these tend to get long for nations with many athletes. It is an article to summarize the nation's performance and by splitting the article up some of the summaries will be moved of this page. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 15:53, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
- I propose something similar to what I did in the Archery Section. This info can be obtained in the main article and those to which it links.--Jax 0677 (talk) 01:13, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
- The changes made to the archery section are misguided. If those changes were made to all sections, the page would be filled with links to other pages, which are quite useless. The information in tables and in text is presented to give the reader a view on the nation's involvement in the MSE. Without these contents, the reader may not be able to access the information regarding the nation's performance as easily as the reader would if the information was readily available on the nation page. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 04:08, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
- I know I'm a month late to the party but I also disagree with your proposed changes. If nation MSE pages were reduced to a list of headers and links to the associated event articles they essentially become pointless. I do agree that these pages can get quite lengthy and it's easy to get lost when scrolling through them though. However since it's a summary page and not just a page of links it is as long as it needs to be. I also disagree with the idea of making pages for each sport as many of these subpages, such as United States in Weightlifting at the 2011 Pan American Games, would be miniscule. As an alternative perhaps we could make some of the longer tables, like the medal summary tables or Athletics and Swimming result tables, collapsible. I know it won't reduce article size on the server but it would at least make things more visually manageable. Torlek (talk) 03:52, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
- Would it be acceptable to close this proposal? It's been over a month since the last post, and there have been no counterarguments to the objections presented to the proposal. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 03:01, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
- Seeing as there have been no further arguments for splitting the article, I will close the discussion. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 01:52, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I started a split for Japan at the 2010 Asian Games with Japan at the 2010 Asian Games (Medal Summary). A few letters can be broken off at one time, as in China at the 2010 Asian Games (A-B). Thoughts???--Jax 0677 (talk) 19:35, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- Not to disregard your contributions, but I'm not a fan of that at all. I'm not a huge fan of splitting the article up into so many subarticles. Personally, I'm not bothered by the article as it is right now, but I understand that an article that's too long can be hard to read. However, I'm not readily in favor of splitting the article up, especially into little subarticles. After reviewing some of the proposals in one of the WP:OLYMPICS discussions, I'm not against having the main article display summarized results with prose and creating a subarticle with detailed results (perhaps for people like me), but my first preference would be to leave the article as is. This also seems like something to be discussed on WT:MSE and/or WT:OLYMPICS, since it seems to be a recurring topic of discussion. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 21:38, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
- Reply - I see no harm in splitting this article, but would also like to hear from a lot more users than what we have heard from.--Jax 0677 (talk) 03:42, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'll post this on WT:MSE, it may get some more attention that way. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 21:36, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- I disagree with splitting the article up. As a coordinator at WP:MSE I don't think it would be good to split them into multiple articles. All information should be available at one location. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 22:02, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'm afraid that unless the size of the article can be reduced considerably then Jax0677 is right. These long articles are a pain to read and play havoc with download allowances etc. I do agree it needs to be done properly with templates on the subpages and an adequate summary left in the main article. Op47 (talk) 18:33, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
- I note that Jax0677 has split off the summary medal tables. I would have preferred to have kept that here. TBH what remains here seems rather crufty, especially since the information can be found in the appropriate <sport> at the 2011 Pan American Games article. Or, if this article should remain as is, make the article JAX split of become the main article and rename this article United States at the 2011 Pan American Games (details) Op47 (talk) 15:34, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
