Not first ship with digital computer

[edit]

Removed "and one of the first digital computers on a surface ship, a Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-8. She was also outfitted with a prototype Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS) for a time." which was added 17 April 2014 by a IP address as its only edit. It is not cited and is incorrect. The first three Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS) service test ships were the USS Oriskany carrier and the USS King and USS Mahan destroyers in 1961, four years before the commissioning of Glover in 1965. The first production run to equip 17 high-priority ships with NTDS were done between 1962-1967. NTDS used Univac AN/USQ-20, or CP-642, 30-bit 32K computers which were designed to withstand the harsh environment of rough seas and battle. The Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-8 was a commercial 12-bit 4K minicomputer and it is very doubtful that a NTDS version was developed for a smaller minicomputer system. In 1967, ASW Ships Command & Control System (ASWSC&CS), a NTDS system for antisubmarine warfare (ASW). was implemented only on the frigates USS Voge, USS Koelsch and the ASW aircraft carrier USS Wasp. Found a reference to DEC PDP-8 computer on USS Glover from Department of Defense Appropriations for Fiscal Year 1972: Hearings Before a Subcommittee of the Committee on Appropriations, U.S. Senate, 92d Congress, First Session, on H.R. [16593]. (1971). United States: U.S. Government Printing Office. ASW SHIP INTERGRATED (sic) COMBAT SYSTEM, p 972-973. April 20, 1971 hearing. https://www.google.com/books/edition/Department_of_Defense_Appropriations_for/Uy1Ga_xbgJIC?hl=en&gbpv=0 (Do a 'Search inside' on 'Glover'.) Still not the first ship to have a computer by 10 years with NTDS computer service testing in 1961. It was used only for research data gathering; not for combat use. Also statement about prototype NTDS may still be incorrect (references needed) in that working production NTDS were in operation at time that Glover was commissioned in 1965 and a working service test ASW NTDS was in operation in 1967 as noted above.
