Whole theme an afterthought?

The attraction's motorbike-styled vehicles were created by Walt Disney Imagineering. The ride was given a Tron theme because the ride vehicles resembled the lightcycles featured in the Tron franchise.

This implies that the attraction's entire theme was an afterthought. Can that possibly be true? Doesn't sound like Disney. – AndyFielding (talk) 11:27, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

AndyFielding: That sentence definitely needs some work, but it appears there is some support for that statement in the WSJ source, which states:

As Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger explained before we climbed aboard together, the ride’s technology—a motorcycle-like perch that secures from the back and sends riders careening headfirst down a track—was invented by Disney theme-park designers and later paired with “Tron” because it matched the films’ hot-rod bikes so well.

It would seem the motorcycle-like configuration was invented prior to the decision to apply the Tron theme, but does that mean they started building the actual attraction before deciding on the theme? No, I don't believe the source says that. BTW, the Entertainment Weekly source doesn't seem to offer any additional support and should be removed as a citation.
