Theft of Neely's Victoria Cross a hoax?

[edit]

According to several local news articles (don't know which is the original, but this one is an example, as is this) there was no theft, and the claimant was not the 'rightful owner', who still possessed Neely's Victoria Cross. According to other sources the VC was later sold at auction at Spink of London on November 25th 2010 (about six months after the alleged theft). This version of events is indirectly confirmed by the official Spink catalogue, which lists the medal on auction at November 25th 2010.
