Singles vs. Promotional Singles

[edit]

There seems to be a hefty debate about this going on. Love it if We Made It and Sincerity is Scary are indeed promotional singles, which is why we should add a section for it just like how every other popular band page has one of their own. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LRLArch (talkcontribs) 04:18, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

So to quote your own edit summary "I removed Love It If We Made It and Sincerity is Scary from the list of singles and added a promotional singles section as well as It's Not Living (If it's Not With You) as a single. Also added clear, definite sources that classify which tracks are official singles and promotional singles. re: TOOTIME & Its Not Living cited sources"
Nowhere in the references does it mention that these songs are promotional singles, you've removed the sources that state these songs are released singles, yeah the promotional leaflet does say "It's not Living" is the third single but your discounting that this could be region specific, "Love It If We Made It" is the current single being pushed on american radio and is charting on the american alternative rock charts. It's listed as a single on the bands official Spotify singles section between "Give Yourself a Try" and "TooTime", promo singles don't get put up like this. Its also listed as a single on discogs. We need consensus before we label any of these songs promotional singles before jumping the gun on this. EL Foz87 (talk) 15:14, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In the sources I provided for TOOTIME and It's Not Living, it clearly states that those songs are the 2nd and 3rd singles from the upcoming album respectively. Bringing up the possibility that its region-specific is simply pushing it in my opinion.
Spotify lists all pre-release tracks as singles, regardless of their promotional or official single status. Otherwise, there would be literally no other place to put them because Spotify isn't like Apple Music where you can view a future album that has yet to be released. Also, usually artists delete the pre-release tracks that are in the singles section once an album is released because there's no need for them to be there.
Plus, the news sources that you provided that supposedly validate the songs' status as official singles are all secondary sources. News sources tend to mislabel songs like that as "singles" in order to make a more boastful headline. The "Dork" sources I provided stem from direct contact with the band regarding the release. Also, the Discogs singles page can be edited by anyone with an account (like wikipedia). Notice how every The 1975 single listed on the website that isn't from A Brief Inquiry are all physical releases. So that, in my belief, is an error on their part. Not a viable source.
Do you have a source that indicates "Love it if We Made it" is being intentionally pushed on American radio? Sometimes, radio stations play promotional tracks purely out of hype. That's why non-single songs from popular albums largely take over the Billboard HOT 100 when the album is released. The fact that they charted does not validate them to having single status.
I agree that we should wait on this issue before proceeding any further. I've contacted their manager Jamie Oborne via Twitter about the issue, but I doubt he'll respond. Let's just see what happens. --LRLArch (talk) 19:20, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah now that I think about it the regional argument does hold less weight in these times of streaming and downloading. But I will say the most recent example of mixed regional releases I can think of this is Arctic Monkeys, who released "Do I Wanna Know?" as the second single in the UK with "R U Mine?" being the first, but "Do I Wanna Know?" was promoted as the lead in America with "R U Mine?" being released 3rd after "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?". So it isn't unprecedented.
Here are some examples where "Love It If We Made It" is called a single and some calling it a second single from when it was released back in July and some as recent as this week, I mean these are all reputable news sources and websites:

I will say that Dirty Hit is very confusing with their release strategy for all of their artists, Pale Waves released all 4 songs from their debut EP as singles before the EP was even released. Having dealt with the label customer service before when pre-ordering albums they have no clue what pre order means when you get your order 2 weeks after release. They are wishy washy in every facet of their organisation. So its not too much of a push for me to believe their advertisement team got some of the promotional leaflets wrong. There is documented cases of the label misprinting etc. EL Foz87 (talk) 14:42, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
All of the news articles mentioning LIIWMI as the second single proceed the announcement of ABIIOR. It would be logical to assume that they specified it as a second single because there was simply not enough information about the record that had yet been known.
Releasing most of a record as singles is common for an EP. They did it with No Rome's latest EP and Coldplay did it with their Kaleidoscope EP. It should be recognized that EP's are NOT treated the same way as traditional records in terms of release. Assuming that a label is disorganized based on personal experience not related to how they release singles does not pass as a viable argument.
Both TOOTIME and It's Not Living were promoted with leaflets that both stated they were the second and third singles from the album respectively:
https://www.readdork.com/news/the-next-single-from-the-1975-will-be-called-tootimetootimetootime-and-its-out-next-week
https://www.readdork.com/news/here-are-the-lyrics-to-the-1975s-new-single-its-not-living-if-its-not-with-you
It should also be recognized that these aren't just random promotional posters. They were sent as packages to Dork HQ most likely by the band themselves or their manager (who happens to also be the label's owner). The chances of both of these cases being slip ups due to typos are very low and assuming that they are simply typos is a very far reach.
Here is yet another source that specifies It's Not Living as the third single
(https://www.nme.com/news/music/the-1975-new-single-its-not-living-if-its-not-with-you-2391438) and another source that specifies TOOTIME as the second single (https://www.nme.com/news/music/the-1975-new-single-tootimetootimetootime-2364440)
I will proceed to revert the changes back to my original edit because sources that rely on input from the band themselves indicate that only some preview tracks are singles. LRLArch (talk) 23:16, 20 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@LRLArch: No, you will not "proceed to revert the changes back to [my] original edit" because you changed the page before ever opening a discussion. Your edits have now been reverted per WP:BRD. You blatantly broke WP:3RR the other day and if you continue to revert today, I will happily report you to an admin. Ss112 22:51, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that "Love It If We Made It" is a single. At least in US and UK radio stations are playing it. MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 23:03, 21 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
