Sister Ships
[edit]I dispite that the Fenella and Tynwald were sister ships. The other six vessels were built in a short space of time post war, and even then each ship had slight differences, for example Manxman was meant to be the slowest of the class. Douglasnicol 16:34, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
According to Richard Danielson's books on the Isle of Man Steam Packet, the Fenella and Tynwald were not not of the same class, though it's possible that they looked much the same. Also, to call the Manxman the last of the classic British turbiners is a bit misleading as the Clyde built TSS Queen Mary II is moored on the Thames. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Douglasnicol (talk • contribs) 18:34, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
What is meant by this is that the Manxman is the last cross-channel ferry in the world, and not British steamer in the world. Lightoller (talk) 19:10, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
- Cross channel? I might be a missing something here, but I'm never aware that the Manxman served on the cross channel route, though I suppose it wasn't uncommon for IOM Steam Packet vessels to have more varied routes in the past than they now do. Douglasnicol (talk) 17:07, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Cross-channel is not meant by what it seems! Lightoller (talk) 18:21, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- Ah right, apologies. There was a piece removed from the main item marked as possible vandalism saying that the Manxman preservation has basically came to nothing now, was that true or just some wiki vandal? Douglasnicol (talk) 12:34, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. By recent sources, unfortunately so. Manxman is not going to be preserved in Liverpool at least. It is very sad news, however we should just pray for the luckiest ship afloat. Here - [1] - Cheers Lightoller (talk) 18:18, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- An American company interested....oh god I can just imagine what might go on, though hopefully things will be okay. I imagine the problems in Liverpool will be the construction of yet more overpriced egg box style flats. Douglasnicol (talk) 23:10, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- It's a shame such history can't be preserved, as the Lottery put some £20m into the Mary Rose for some strange reason. The Manxman is the last of her kind and Cammell Laird ship in existance too. Lightoller (talk) 14:29, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- If you ever want to see a nice looking ship, the Turbine Steamer Queen Mary is on the Thames, I've got a picture in my talk page and was lucky enough to be on that vessel in its last year in Cal-Mac's service. At least the Clyde still has the Waverley... Funnily enough, the town I live in, Ayr, I have a local history book, and apparently Manxman paid at least one visit to Ayr Harbour, it must have been a special excursion as Ayr was never a regular Scottish port for the Isle of Man, it was Ardrossan and latterly Stranraer.
