Name
[edit]- The phrase about the pond: 'on which swans have traditionally been kept' is somewhat misleading. Swans have only been kept on the pond for short periods recently. It gives the impression that the swans led to the the name of Swanland. There are two theories about where the village name came from, one is from the invading Danish King Swein and the other is from swans being kept locally on meres. 19:41, 24 May 2006 User:Chillly
- Fair point. I wrote the original phrase but didn't feel knowledgeable enough to start on the whole "Was the village named after the swans or not" debate so I was trying to skirt this issue. Although I assume swans have been on the pond for quite a while. Feel free to change it or add more info {this is Wikipedia after all :-) }. Chris, your name seems familiar - were you involved in the Scout Group in North Ferriby in the 80s? Dave w74 20:22, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah that's me. 14:14, 25 May 2006 User:Chillly

Swanland → Swanland, East Yorkshire — Not to be confused with other places of the same name Ha811 (talk) 14:24, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose - please provide links to similarly named places - I can't find any. – ukexpat (talk) 18:07, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose - no need for dab and the wrong dab supplied as the dab would be East Riding of Yorkshire. Keith D (talk) 19:32, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
- There doesn't appear to be another place called Swanland (if there is, Wikipedia doesn't have anything about it) and I couldn't find anything it would be a likely misspelling of. Peter E. James (talk) 02:16, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- Comment there is the one in Australia... Swan Land District . 65.94.45.167 (talk) 06:16, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- That article is about a land district, called Swan - however "Swanland" does appear to be a name for an area of Western Australia (larger than the land district, and I'm not sure how commonly used the name is). The village still seems to be the primary topic. Peter E. James (talk) 09:50, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- Covered by HAT note as not spelt the same. Keith D (talk) 13:48, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose. For those needing work to do, go create a dab page at Swan Land if you want but there's no ambiguity with Swanland. — AjaxSmack 01:59, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
