There was a semi-mechanical device used to uproot Mallee, invented by a Mr. Mullens. The process of clearing Mallee land with this device became known as "Mullenisation". Around that time, there was developed a sort of giant adze with a long wooden handle, and was specifically used to "Grub out" Mallee roots. it was called a "Mallee Grubber". Time passed and the term" Mullenisation" fused with "Mallee Grubber" and the adze became known as a "Mulley Grubber".
In the mid 1900's after WW2, there was, for the first time, a large influx of non-British European immigrants, many skilled tradesmen, among them plumbers. There was a large metal device used by plumbers to grasp and hold pipes, known as "Grabbers". As the "Mulley Grubbers" disappeared, replaced with fully mechanical uprooters, these European plumbers started to call the pipe grabbers "Mulley Grubbers".
Strange, but true. I have used the Adze "Mallee Grubber" and the metal pipe "Grabbers" and witnessed the bizarre transformation of meanings. Historygypsy (talk) 01:03, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
