{{edit semi-protected}} Please change the Super_PAC_and_2012_Presidential_campaign section to reflect recent updates with his super PAC. Such as the amount of money raised, the results of south carolina poll, and the end. Thanks, I would do it myself but won't let me. Colbert's vandalism of Wikipedia

Really, we should not let him get away with that vandalism. No matterhow funny it may have been, there should have been at least a sentence about it!209.121.127.164 (talk) 21:37, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Oh I agree. I was hoping to make this edit, at it is an important note.

Spin City

It mentions near the beginning of the article that he made a guest appearance on the show "Spin City", but it's not listed anywhere in his filmography section. Does anyone know what year/episode/character, and if so can they fill it in? 173.171.125.27 (talk) 17:08, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

The name of the episode is "The Competition" from season one. It originally aired on Nov. 26, 1996. source is imdb.com. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Llama5476 (talkcontribs) 19:38, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Charleston Bermuda Boat Race

The article currently states that Colbert finished second in the 2011 race. The race is on-going. The cited source mentioned he was currently in second place, but the race has not yet finished. Stephen Colbert and his charter, the Spirit of Juno are according to the tracking website for the race, are currently in the leading position. But damn wikiality... he'll probably finish in second now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.118.46.21 (talk) 03:55, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Bad Grammar

"Although, by his own account, he was not particularly political before joining the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert has described himself as a Democrat according to a 2004 interview.[98][99] In an interview at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard Institute of Politics, he stated that he has "no problems with Republicans, just Republican policies".[100]"

These sentences make it sound like all or most democrats have a problem with republicans not republican policies. I would like to have it re-worded for clarity and possibly NPOV. 98.127.120.45 (talk)

Dungeons and Dragons

Stephen Colbert has something of a following in the gaming community and has stated publicly on many occasions he used to play D&D. His affection for Tolkein is also well known. 107.3.67.184 (talk) 13:05, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

True but trivial and unsourced. DP76764 (Talk) 19:48, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Colbert Played D&D and is a big Lord of the Ring's Fan: http://movies.ign.com/articles/433/433111p1.html I would support including the information 107.3... wants here and say it isn't trivial; it is part of his persona. It comes up all the time on his show. And in the gaming community it is far from trivial. 98.110.177.20 (talk) 20:41, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

If it's 'part of the persona' as you say, then it belong on his character article. I would suggest finding additional sources, as this article (and the other) isn't written for the gaming community, but the entire world. DP76764 (Talk) 01:45, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

To add some clarity here, it isn't part of his fictional persona, he was speaking as the real stephen colbert in the interview posted above, and he this is a very well known and highly publicized part of his life. Absolutely it isn't written for the gaming community, but why leave out such a prominent component of who the man is, and why dismiss his ties to the gaming community as not worth mentioning? In most wiki articles, a celebrity playing dungeons and dragons does get mentioned. So we've sourced it, and we've established it isn't trivial. Any other objections before I include it? 107.3.67.184 (talk) 13:59, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Go for it. I also think its notable. Outback the koala (talk) 04:07, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Just compiling some possible sources here for us to sort through before crafting an entry. Propose something to the effect of Colbert as Geek Icon as a section (but we can hash this out as we go). Would rather we get any major quibbles out of the way before editing the actual article itself:

http://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-colbert-the-most-trusted-fake-news-man-in-america-2011-5

http://www.royalgazette.com/article/20110530/NEWS/705309970/-1/NEWS Mr Colbert grew up outside of Charleston, South Carolina, the youngest of 11 children. He teaches Sunday School in New Jersey.

He is apparently a fan of fantasy writer JRR Tolkien novels and enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons, a role-playing game popular among cerebral teenagers.

The parallels between a little hobbit leaving his comfortable shire in search of adventure and Mr Colbert’s trip across the Gulf Stream seem uncanny. But Mr Colbert said he didn’t see himself so much as a Bilbo Baggins or the wizard Gandalf.

“I see myself more as an Arundel,” he joked.

Arundel is the creator of all mankind in ‘Lord of the Rings’. 107.3.67.184 (talk) 13:23, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Here is a lengthy article where he describes his experience playing D&D: http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/dungeons-dragons-online/537989p1.html

Here he is on a list of people who play D&D: http://thetorchonline.com/latest/20-celebrities-who-play-dungeons-dragons/ 107.3.67.184 (talk) 13:25, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Here he memorializes Gary Gygax, the creator of D&D, on his show: http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/156302/march-05-2008/r-i-p--gary-gygax

I'd say these basically establish that he A) plays or played D&D, B)Is a Tolkien fan and C) D&D and Tolkien are significant pieces of his personal history. It somewhat establishes his importance in the gaming community. But I think we need more articles to support that.

And here he is on conan discussing them:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7uvw_colbert-on-obrian_people107.3.67.184 (talk) 13:29, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Excellent, thank you for finding more sources. Now, how do you propose incorporating this material into the article? Please try not to give it too much weight in he article; a sentence or two seems appropriate (perhaps in the Early life section). Also, I find the claim that he's important in the gaming community to be dubious at best; he's just a celebrity with a gaming background. Heck, he's never even been a guest at GenCon. DP76764 (Talk) 15:12, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Oh look, there's already a mention of this in that section. So, what more do we need to add here? DP76764 (Talk) 15:16, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

I do think he is an icon in the gaming community. As a long time gamer, who goes to cons, and who posts on forums, there is no doubt of that. The question is whether any reliable sources out there make that claim.

Just because he's never been a guest at gen con doesn't mean he isn't a gaming icon. It just means his celebrity is too big and his rates too high. Generally you get people whose careers have died down, or who are lesser known celebrities attending gen con as guests. 107.3.67.184 (talk) 15:42, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Yes, you will need some good sources for that. Your own observations wouldn't be enough for inclusion. I have a gaming background as well and would hardly classify him as an icon. And the man is fairly shameless about plugging himself; I doubt that speaking fees are a factor in whether or not he's been a guest at a con. DP76764 (Talk) 17:03, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

In terms of what we can add, it does look like its mentioned in his early childhood. But we can probably include details like he continues mention gaming on his show and in public. That he mentioned the passing of Gary Gygax on his show is probably significant. Really I think there are a lot of unmined sources on this. The ones I found were from a cursory google search. I imagine there are articles about him in the gaming community as well. 107.3.67.184 (talk) 15:45, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

I disagree with this assessment. If it's related to his show, then it belongs on the show's article and not his personal bio. Also, be careful with the 'gaming community' sources; blogs, fan sites and personal pages are generally not considered reliable. DP76764 (Talk) 17:05, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
At a certain point you have to allow some gaming news sources in. There aren't very many print sources for gaming. I feel like people deflect any niche news sources as irrelevant (and maybe it would be if the subject were the status of glenn beck) but when the subject is the state of things in that niche community itself, these are totally reliable sources if they are established in the community. I also don't see how his status among gamers isn't relevant to his personal bio. I agree the gygax thing probbaly needs to be on the show page. But how he is viewed by a community of people is significant to his biography. 107.3.67.184 (talk) 17:21, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Absolutely disagree with you on that point. The way he's viewed by any given community is not necessarily notable or pertinent to this article. If it were, biography articles would be huge collections of 'how is so and so seen by the X community'. Community views need to be significant (to the general population, not a niche) and well sourced. I would argue that the military community's view of him would be much more notable, given his USO work and support of troops via IAVA, etc. Or how about the education community due to his work with Donors Choose? Or the space/science community due to his 'work' with NASA?
In terms of sourcing, relevance in a community can *rarely* qualify a source as reliable (civfanatics for the Civilization series comes to mind). It's a case by case situation though. I recommend you take a thorough read through WP:RS and WP:5P (and possibly WP:NOT). They don't have to be printed sources, just reliable. However, I think you will find that there are already plenty of sources from gaming circles that are considered reliable, so it should just be a matter of finding material from them. DP76764 (Talk) 18:01, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Community views only need to be significant to the community. If there is a public figure who is embraced by a minority group for example, that is notworthy and included in articles. By the same token if there is a figure who is ill-regarded, say by trangendered people, then that is also noteworthy and included. I agree that the military's view is notable and should be included as well. That doesn't mean that embrace of him by the gaming community should be dismissed. 107.3.67.184 (talk) 18:11, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Ah, I believe you are incorrect about what determines a notable/significant view. People who are embraced by groups have that mentioned IF that information is covered widely by reliable sources, not because of the mere existence of the embrace itself. Please see WP:N. (also, please try to indent your replies so future readers can follow the conversation more easily). DP76764 (Talk) 18:49, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
I believe you are missapplying notability here. If we wanted an article on STEVEN COLBERT AS GAMER ICON, then sure. But we aren't debating whether an article should be included. Only whether a feature of that article should be included. Just because it doesn't get mentioned in the NY times, doesn't mean it isn't relevant. He has stated many times he is a gamer. We'd expect some information on how gamers themselves react to this information. 107.3.67.184 (talk) 20:24, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Stephen has said that he turned to fantasy writing and Tolkien and D&D after the death of his father and two brothers. He doesn't specifically mention it here:http://www.avclub.com/articles/stephen-colbert,13970/ but he does talk about role playing and Tolkien. He goes into more depth about how the deaths in his family led to his interest in Tolkien, fantasy and role playing on the Charlie Rose show-link:http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/93 Llama5476 (talk) 20:18, 3 September 2011 (UTC)llama

Edit request from Bradleythefox, 24 June 2011

I would like you to add an entry to Stephen Colbert's awards and honors. In 2009 NASA honored Colbert by naming the treadmill that is now onboard the international space station after the comedy central host by using the acronym COLBERT to describe the treadmill. 3 years ago while Nasa was holding a an online vote to name the newest part of the I.S.S Colbert actually convinced hundreds of thousands of fans of his show to flood the NASA website with votes to name an entire space station module after him. Needless to say, He won by a landslide! victory however this victory was bittersweet and I believe the module ended up being named tranquility instead. While NASA refused to brandish Colberts name on the Lab Module they did however acknowlage Stephens victory in another way that was none the less as amazing still!, He being the rightful winner of the contest, he was instead bestowed as the having an acromym of his last Name immortalized to denote as well as describe this treadmill used for exercise by the astro/cosmonauts on board the I.S.S. Although it was the best they could do for Colbert but he was still the first ever comedian/news Anchor ever to have his name immortalized as part of a NASA spacecraft of anything NASA for that matter. So it seems that with the shuttle program coming to end this month, in my opinion this is one of the greatest honors any human being could ever receive! I belive this Honor bestowed upon him by NASA is beyond worthy of being mentioned on his wikipedia entry. Just think about it...their is literally a piece of exercise equipment with this Mans name on it and used to describe it orbiting around our planet right now at 17,500 miles per hour and it was flown there, into space by the greatest machine the world has ever known, A NASA space shuttle! That my friend is not simply just an honor or achievement from NASA but a testament to this one Mans ability to influence our Space Agency, the Nation and even to have the following to gain the support of people from all over the world who cast their votes so this one mans dream of having his name immortalized on board of the crown jewel of our scientific prowess, the International Space station was realized. To many of you it might just be a treadmill that's called COLBERT but to myself and I'm sure to many others it's proof that if we work hard and put our minds to achieving great things in life we to could someday have a treadmill with our name on flying around a planet it in outer fricken Space. I still can't understand why this amazingly rare opportunity and honor Stephen Colbert received from NASA has been left out from This wiki? in my opinion this acheavment is not just an inspiration, but proof that we can all shoot for the stars and achieve the greatest of great things in our lives that most would never even think possible! If a sentence or two about the "Stephen Colbert I.S.S Astro/Cosmonaut Space Treadmill" is not seen as an accomplishment thats worth mentioning on this great mans Wikipedia entry then I don't know what all of you consider as the definition of a great honor and award to be? but please do let me know?!? A Citation can be veiwed @ www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/behindscenes/colberttreadmill.html.

Thank you Bradley Fox

Pronunciation of "Colbert Report"

Some mention should be made that the title of the show is jokingly pronounced (by Colbert at least) with a silent T at the end of both "Colbert" and "Report".184.162.187.192 (talk) 00:26, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Remove future tense from "Awards and Honors" section

This sentence should be rephrased into past tense: "Colbert will be the 2011 commencement speaker for Northwestern University, and receive an honorary degree." It's currently the last sentence in that section. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.218.187.50 (talk) 01:30, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Missing sections/info??

There appears to be no mention of Stephen being knighted by Sir Paul McCartney or his own Ben and Jerrys flavor "Americone Dream" or the water-fight between him and Sir Richard Branson or from the Daily-Show The "Even Stevphens" or "This week in God". His SuperPAC only gets a casual mention and there is no listing of his characterizations (such as the very funny Esteban Colberto or Ching-chong-ding-dong or...) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.128.14.38 (talk) 14:37, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

I'm confused why Stephen's honorary titles are only associated with his "fictional" character. As far as I know, his honorary doctorate and knighthood are legal, and as such he should be referred to here as well as Sir Dr. Stephen Colbert. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.102.14.153 (talk) 06:05, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Awards?

In an audience Q&A for the show on Tuesday 10th November 2011, Stephen Colbert said Marvel sent him a replica shield in 2007, saying it was left to him by Captain America in his will, as the only patriot worthy of it, and that this prompted his wife to burst into tears. He confessed he was somewhat bemused by her reaction to a fictional character leaving a prop shield to a fictionalized version of himself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.173.242.207 (talk) 05:30, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Colbert's Children

The article references citation 106 (http://www.parents.com/family-life/celebrity-parents/moms-dads/celebrity-parents-stephen-colbert/) for the claim that all of his children have appeared on The Daily Show, but I don't see that mentioned anywhere in the magazine article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.161.133.108 (talk) 03:14, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

I have removed the aforementioned assertion which, as you pointed out, was not supported by the citation.--JayJasper (talk) 05:40, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

A Colbertan

A Colbertan is a common term (not really) for a person who receives their news only from Stephan Colbert. This person, believe it or not, is able to quote word for word the entire episode. The will, many times, use the following terms: Bug-a-boo, truthiness, and wikiality. It is extremely likely that a Colbertan has donated to the SuperPac that was started by their 'leader.' The main purpose was to see their name on the lovely scroll that could be found on the bottom of the screen during the report's episode.

A colbertan many times will repeat funny jokes heard on the show, neglecting to mention the fact that it wasn't their joke. They will sometimes use the Word of the Day, even if it is inappropriate. What very few people know about Colbertans is that they are obsessed with the movie Barney's Great Adventure.

Signs of a Colbertan: -Anyone wearing a suit. -People who like to speak in the 'demon' voice. -Crazies who download the Moron Test App. -The person who chuckles when they hear the name Santorum. -Adults who write in Stephan Colbert on every single election Ballot. -Anyone who is reading this! -Sane people who are against wearing males Spanx® (unlike those who follow Jon Stewart).

If you need specific examples of these sort of people, just search Stephan Colbert on the Urban Dictionary.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by XYZ1009998 (talkcontribs) 01:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Edit Request for the Colbert SuperPAC

According to the Colbert SuperPAC website, Jon Stewart has signed over control of "Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tommorow" back to Stephen Colbert. I am requesting that the section to be reedited to include this recent development. Here is the source: http://www.colbertsup

On August 8, 2012, The Republican National Committee formally endorsed Stephen Colbert as the fifth possible running mate for Willard Mitt Romney. Mr Colbert, referred all comments to his agent and said he would announce his decision on Friday, August 10, 2012 at noon, on The Fox Cable Network. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.51.152.38 (talk) 23:20, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Colbert on "Who's Line is It Anyway?"

In the "Early Comedy" section, there is no mention of Colbert appearing on the show, even though he shows up in episode 116 (US Season 1 Ep 17) and Season 8 Ep 9 (according to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Whose_Line_Is_It_Anyway%3F_US_episodes ). Also, not sure if this belongs in the "Early Comedy" section, because it includes episodes from 1999 and 2006. 128.101.181.125 (talk) 00:20, 1 April 2012 (UTC)K

Stephen Colbert won two additional Emmy awards on September 22 and an Emmy award in 2010 for The Colbert Report. These are listed in the Infobox; however, only the win in 2008 and his nominations are mentioned in the main article text. The introductory summary and the Television Career and Awards and honors sections are all missing some of this information.

I request that the introductory summary text be changed from

"Since its debut, the series has established itself as one of Comedy Central's highest-rated series, earning Colbert three Emmy Award nominations and an invitation to perform as featured entertainer at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in 2006."

to

"Since its debut, the series has established itself as one of Comedy Central's highest-rated series, earning Colbert two Emmy Awards, seven Emmy Award nominations and an invitation to perform as featured entertainer at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in 2006."

The Television Career and Awards and honors sections should also be changed at the discretion of an authorized editor to reflect Colbert's more recent Emmy awards and nominations.

Ref: "Academic Freedom and Tenure: St. Louis University: AAUP Bulletin 42.1 (Spring,1956) p. 108n.1 Dr. Pisano is correct. See reference above Stephen Colbert's father was Dean of the medical school at St. Louis University, not Washington University (as the article presently says). James Colbert's picture is on display at the med school at St Louis University. The resemblance to Stephen is really striking, so much so that I'm sure many think it's a portrait of the famous son, not the father, but the nameplate below the painting leaves no doubt.

James Colbert subsequently served as Provost at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. The library and education building is named for him now, with the name right over the entrance to the building.

I also doubt that he was dean at Yale. Most likely he was chair of The department of medicine at Yale. I do not know this for sure, but it would be odd for someone to leave a dean ship at a pretigious institution like Yale and take a less prestigious one.

Twitter Controversy?

Should the recent controversy over tweets Colbert made be mentioned on here? Thehack771 (talk) 18:21, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

It's probably better off on the show's article (or the character's article). DP76764 (Talk) 19:08, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
I assume this thread is referencing the recent tweet from @ColbertReport and the trending #CancelColbert hashtag?
To me, I think the best location for that content would be in the article for The Colbert Report. Neither the performer nor the production staff of the Colbert Report made the tweet (they were made by Comedy Central staff, who controlled the Twitter account "@ColbertReport"). But the tweet did gain media attention about the program and the character, there's more than enough third-party sources to reference the content. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 19:32, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

Under the Colbert Report section, I would like to add, after the sentence stating that the show is ending in 2014, a reference to the countdown to the end of the show that is shown at the beginning of the shows intro. I can provide a picture of the countdown but if you review the intro to the show just before Stephen Colbert jumps with the flag and starts falling, you will see a number currently in the 80s (June 12th show numbered as 83). I have been watching every day and the number corresponds with the approximate ending of the show if you consider the breaks the show takes as well as the fact that there are no shows on fridays. Episodes

Now that the Colbert Report is over can you guys put the number of episodes on the filmography section. (2605:E000:87C2:3200:41AF:D70F:72F8:4B83 (talk) 06:06, 19 December 2014 (UTC))

Issues with tense change in lede

Two edits were made:

First, tenses of verbs in sentence were made consistent. If the title subject "was" the host, then he "portrayed", not "portrays" (in simplest usage, for while the program's continuation through syndication, were it a topic of the paragraph, might allow the present tense, the simplest, most acceptable answer is to make the tenses consistently past).

Second, the edit of this sentence regarding the show, to past tense, was further sloppy in its lacking the same information and sourcing in the main body, and for its immediately begging the question "when?" (i.e., for what period was he host, which is unstated in the lede, and less clear than it needs to be in the main body). Hence, this sentence is tagged until someone can provide a source reporting the final show, and add the duration of the series.

Finally, venerable though the one having the experience may be, it would seem to me to be WP:OR, and otherwise objectionable here, to source personal experience of an event—I saw Cubs win, I attended final show afterparty, etc.—as basis for WP BLP edits. See here for my reason for saying this, searching for "Wales" within this page: [1], accessed 19 December 2014. Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 18:47, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

I grant, in fact, agree entirely, as it states in the reverting edit summary, that a citation in the lede is unnecessary. Where is the citation indicating the end of this host's tenure, in the article main body? I searched, including for word "final", and could find no statement or citation. Please answer here before reverting again. Leprof 7272 (talk) 19:20, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
In the section below about the Colbert Report, as I mentioned when I reverted the edit above, it clearly gives the dates:

From October 17, 2005 through December 18, 2014, Colbert hosted his own television show, The Colbert Report, a Daily Show spin-off . . .

The highly publicized last episode, last night, draws the series to an end and causes many sentences in the article to refer to what is currently his primary achievement as past tense. Ordinarily, we do not need to cite items in the lede when the details are covered later in the article. Of all articles on wikipedia, this is one of the best documented. Trackinfo (talk) 19:22, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
I added a section to make it well sourced and clear the series had ended, as opposed to other sources that predicted the final episode. Trackinfo (talk) 19:40, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
All information presented, assented to, the lede edit is acknowledged and fine, and assuming I find that the quote and other content there are explicitly sourced, we are good to go. Cheers. Leprof 7272 (talk) 20:38, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

Small changes to The Colbert Report section

I completed the Deadline.com citation that closes this section (regarding the show's final episode), from the bare URL. I duplicated this source, from the final paragraph to the opening paragraph (containing the series date range), since the early citations in this paragraph were old, and so could not contain the series end date. I also edited the text slightly to make pairing of text with source citation easier and more accurate. Since the start date of the series did not appear in this new source (or clearly, in the old appearing sources), I added a [citation needed] tag to call for the source of the show opening date.

Then, the closing, very descriptive, quotation-containing, and fact-filled sentences of the first paragraph contains prose from some unidentified source:

Colbert hosted the show in-character as a blustery right-wing pundit, generally considered to be an extension of his character on The Daily Show. Conceived by co-creators Stewart, Colbert, and Ben Karlin in part as an opportunity to explore "the character-driven news", the series focused less on the day-to-day news style of the Daily Show, instead frequently concentrating on the foibles of the host-character himself.

…so I added a further [citation needed] tag to this sentence, to ask the contributing/another interested editor to provide the source of this vivid description.

Finally, I added a little to the final paragraph on the content of the final episode; see what you think. This will close my participation here. (My biggest concern, someone's use of personal experience rather than sources to justify the original tense change in the lede, has been well addressed.) Cheers. Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 21:37, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

Here are two sources that contain the "blustery" language (Source 1), and the quoted "character-driven news" language (Source 2). When adding these, please take the time to put them in good consistent format (e.g., see Deadline.com source referred to above)—not just to add the bare URLs:

Seeking consensus to add another source to the article

Currently, this sentence has three referenced sources: "Colbert sometimes comedically claims his surname is French, but his mother's ancestry was Irish, and his father's ancestry was mostly Irish, with some German and English."

I would like to see another source added, perhaps with the additional detail that Colbert's ancestry is 15/16ths Irish. The source I am citing is written by one of America's premier genealogists, Megan Smolenyak, and includes several substantiating documents showing the genealogical line. It was Megan's research featured in "Faces of America," and this article is more comprehensive about Stephen Colbert's heritage than the other sources cited.[2]

Nicole.Paull (talk) 19:35, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Agree - Megan Smolenyak is extremely well respected and experienced in genealogy and collaborated with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, as Nicole wrote. Here's a little about Colbert's appearance with Gates on "Faces of America": http://www.pbs.org/wnet/facesofamerica/profiles/stephen-colbert/11/ (unfortunately, the videos are no longer available). I wouldn't parse the "15/16" thing, though. "Irish heritage" is good. I see no reason to split hairs (or heirs .^_^.). Nearly all of us are mutts, anyway, so what does splitting out the one Germanish GGGP accomplish? With Smolenyak's article linked, a reader can go there to read the details for themselves, if the so desire. Thank you, Wordreader (talk) 00:50, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Influences

I deleted BIll O'Reilly from the list of influences and was immediately rolled-back by an editor who I believe over-stepped their authority. My edit was a "good faith edit" and not usually subject to such an action. Bill O'Reilly is an object of satire for Mr. Colbert. Calling him an influence would be like calling George W. Bush an influence. At the very least a reversal should have been accompanied with more sophisticated comments than "Nope" and then pointing to the referenced article--which I read and which I believe supports my deletion. B1db2 (talk) 05:56, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

I don't know where you get the idea that an edit is immune to being undone just because the editor thought it was appropriate. That's not at all how Wikipedia works; good-faith edits are routinely undone when another editor disagrees. And I did not simply say "Nope"; I briefly explained my objection. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 16:20, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
You are correct about the "nope" part. I had remembered it as a bit more terse than it was. I apologize. Also, I read the statement below and felt your rollback was an example. Apparently, though, if you append a comment then a rollback is appropriate?
"Use of standard rollback for any other purposes – such as reverting good-faith changes which you happen to disagree with – is likely to be considered misuse of the tool. When in doubt, use another method of reversion and supply an edit summary to explain your reasoning."B1db2 (talk) 20:03, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
"Rollback" is a one-click tool for quickly undoing vandalism, available to editors who've shown they can be trusted to use it appropriately; I didn't use that here. I did what that quote says I should do: restore it manually, with an explanation. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 01:09, 26 December 2015 (UTC)
O'Reilly is pretty clearly an influence of the character, but possibly not the comedian. -mattbuck (Talk) 09:53, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
Clearly a basis for the character. I would be interested in any argument as to how he is an influence for the comedian B1db2 (talk) 15:02, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
In the sense that the comedian based his act on O'Reilly's on-screen persona. In an article about an entertainer, "influences" means people who inspired his performance, not people who shaped his personal values. Colbert has said repeatedly that O'Reilly as a television host was an influence on the development of his act; whether you interpret it sarcastically or not, the influence of that performer on Colbert as a performer clearly exists, and is a matter of public record. (Your analogy of President Bush misses an important difference: Colbert has mocked him, but he hasn't done a show where he emulates Bush's tone and stylings.) It isn't our place to evaluate whether Mr. Colbert likes or dislikes Mr. O'Reilly personally or what he thinks of the man's politics, but to observe which prior entertainers' work influenced the work of this one. And by any objective standard, without the example of Bill O'Reilly's program to base it on, Stephen Colbert's program would not have been what it was. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 16:20, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
I appreciate your argument, but have to disagree. The Colbert Report was satirical takedown of O'Reilly's on-screen persona, as you call it. He was mocking him (among others), just as he was mocking Bush during the White House Correspondents dinner. I believe that if you expand the definition of influences to include those "who inspired his performance" then there can be no end to the list. Also, O'Reilly may be using a persona, but he means to be taken seriously. You certainly cannot say the same of Colbert's character.B1db2 (talk) 20:26, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
I'm not suggesting we list everyone, just influences that are independently documented as noteworthy. Did Colbert do a parody of Bush? (I didn't see it.) Even if so, it was just a thing he did once, not something he built his act on like the O'Reilly-esque Colbert Report was. Whether he means it to be taken seriously isn't the point. If I'm an Elvis impersonator, and I develop a performance that mimics Presley's singing and dancing, it doesn't matter whether I'm doing it out of sincere admiration, affectionate humor, or biting ridicule... whatever the intent of it is, my singing and dancing is objectively derived from his, and that's the sort of thing Wikipedia is supposed to document. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 01:09, 26 December 2015 (UTC)
At this point I recommend we bring in Mr. Colbert (the real person) ala Marshall Mcluhan in Annie Hall. B1db2 (talk) 19:54, 26 December 2015 (UTC)
Also not how Wikipedia works. –Jason A. Quest (talk) 02:04, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

I don't see a reference to Colbert's appearance on the Jerry Seinfeld web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, released July 8, 2015. The episode, "Cut Up and Bloody but Looking Good", was Season 6, Number 6. The pair rode in a 1964 Morgan +4 to the Bluestone Coffee Company, Montclair, New Jersey. It's one of the funniest of the series, in my opinion. The series has again been nominated for a Primetime Emmy. http://comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com/stephen-colbert-cut-up-and-bloody-but-looking-good Thank you, Wordreader (talk) 02:51, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

It's one appearance, on a series that has had a lot of famous people on it. Not especially notable -Jason A. Quest (talk) 02:59, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
You can do what you like, Jason A. Quest, but in other WP articles I've read concerning entertainers, every appearance is entered into the articles' tables, whether films, a single appearance in TV series, or web shows. Sometimes, even particularly well-known ad campaigns are credited. (Colbert was not merely one of several persons in the webisode, but was the only guest.) So add it to the table. It just isn't significant enough to write about. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 13:28, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Confusing sentence

The intro says "Colbert had originally studied to be an actor; however, he became interested in improvisational theatre when he met Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University." Improv performers are actors, so this sentence is puzzling. As per the "Early career in comedy" section, I assume the intended meaning is that Colbert had originally studied to be a dramatic actor, but became interested in improvisational comedy. I'll add the word "dramatic," but I don't know how to convey the distinction without removing the word "theater," so I'll leave that as is. Sadiemonster (talk) 13:12, 25 February 2017 (UTC)
