This is Scribing

The method described is termed "scribing". Spiling involves transferring a point to the board by swinging a compass to create a reference arc on the spiling board and then restoring the point by twice setting the compass base leg on the arc and swinging short arcs, which cross at the original point. Alternatively, a spiling stick can be used to mark a line and a specific distance on the spiling board, which is then restored (using the same spiling stick) to recover the original point.
