Sidney Maynard Smith was the son of W.H. Smith (not the W.H. Smith of bookseller fame) and the father of noted biologist John Maynard Smith. John's entry notes that Maynard Smith is a unhyphenated barreled surname. Did Sidney at some point adopt that surname, perhaps because Smith was just too common?
