Ethnic Background

[edit]

The page does not break down by ethnic background. That is NATIONALITY background. Does anyone have real ethnic background to post? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.249.36.16 (talk)

History section

[edit]

Could someone please add expanded information on the History of Sherbrooke, as has been done with Trois-Rivières and similar pages? --dragfyre 16:32, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm taking care of it. (Currently writing... as free time allows. I'll put in online when it's complete.)
One of you will have to proof-read my text, though. (To correct my English, not my facts. ;-) )

Not a problem - there is a world full of proofreaders available on wikipedia ;) --dragfyre 14:27, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In searching for a watercolour artist, S. Fisette, I came across the following 1940 paper, which provides some history of Sherbrooke http://www.umanitoba.ca/colleges/st_pauls/ccha/Back%20Issues/CCHA1939-40/Walsh.html

From the monument, it would be nice to record the number of soldiers killed during the war(s) that were from Sherbrooke. Student7 (talk) 23:32, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

revision

[edit]

Are there any objections of breaking up the "description" section into the following (in order) and expanding on them:

History, Geography, Demographic, Neighborhoods, Economy, Transportation, Education, Media, Sister cities, People from Sherbrooke, See also, notes, References, External links

Volsus 15:04, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good... although I would suggest that 'People from Sherbrooke' be changed to 'Notable Sherbrooke residents'. --dragfyre 15:12, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

People

[edit]

In your "People from Sherbrooke" section, I can't believe you left out Mad. Justice Louise Arbour! Oh and as an anglo former resident of Hyatt's Mills, I could help with any translation/English grammar problems you might have. Esseh 22:21, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

... Oh and links to the Bishop's University and Sherbrooke Record web sites might be added to your links list. Just a thought... Esseh 22:23, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In his writings, Buckminster Fuller mentions working in some sort of textile factory or mill in Sherbrooke. Maybe someone more expert than I can check local references to see if this qualifies in some way as residence. In particular, he notes how raw materials were delivered to the top floor, lowered from level to level as manufacturing progressed, and shipped from the ground floor. This suggests something like the mills I saw when driving south through town. Monomoit (talk) 20:02, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea what you actually meant by this question about residence, but the textile mill you are hinting at can only be the Andrew Paton and Company on the corner of Belvedere and King which was founded in 1866. In 1868 it was enlarged and renamed to Paton Manufacturing Company. In 1892 it was again re-enlarged, in 1905 it was merged with the neighbor Adam Lomas and son. In 1923 it ended under the control of the Dominion Textile and became known as Paton Manufacturing Company Limited, it was finally shut down in 1983 after 115 years of operation. The big red brick building is indeed still standing with surrounding building now named the Andrew Paton Complex. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.254.46.108 (talk) 23:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rename page

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was move. Mindmatrix 13:35, 14 July 2008 (UTC) Rename: Sherbrooke, QuebecSherbrooke[reply]

Per WP:CANSTYLE and WP:PRIMARYUSAGE, this city should have an article at the undisambiguated name (see also WP:CANCITY). There are a number of other uses of the term, such as the neighbourhood Sherbrooke (Edmonton) or the community Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia. However, this city is clearly the primary use of the term, and the undisambiguated title currently redirects to the article about the city. Mindmatrix 15:16, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

B class status.

[edit]

@SweetNightmares: I am replying on here just because this feels like the perfect place to put it as future editors could help improve too.

The article is definitely a candidate for GA or possibly even FA sometime. But right now, it it C class on the verge of becoming a B-Class. There is two major things to work on. The expansion and the citations. I know B-Class status allows some citation needed tags, but there are entire sections missing citations such as Culture and Sports. After most citations are fixed, it could become a B.

GA class is a little different. You would have to expand all the sections and improve all the citations. Some more copy editing and fix the dead links. Here are some useful tools. [1] [2] [3]

That's the best I could provide. If you want, you can set up a peer review and I'll be happy to give you more specific suggestions. Cheers, TheQ Editor (Talk) 17:45, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@TheQ Editor: Thanks for the speedy reply. However, if the expand section templates weren't on the page, would you know that they needed expansion? They are only there because the article is not 100% synchronized with the French-language article. Out of the citations needed, it looks to me like 3 of them actually need citations, those being:
  • British heritage
  • "emblematic"
  • hosting the 2002 Championships

For B Class? Sure. But anything higher than B will now allow it to go past.TheQ Editor (Talk) 18:05, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead and filled in some of the references. I couldn't find anything for Sports. Perhaps a "francais" search could turn up some results. I'm not that very good at french.TheQ Editor (Talk) 18:22, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the effort. Hopefully I can get to filling in the rest of the info soon, at which point I might ask you for a PR. Thanks again TheQ! - SweetNightmares 19:32, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there - I'm responding to the request for re-assessment made in January 2015. I think the article is correctly rated C class at the moment, but it's close to B. A couple of issues: (1) there are two bare URLs in the references (numbers 31 and 32 at the moment), (2) several statements are tagged as needing citations, and (3) there are a few 'needs expansion' tags in the article as well. I didn't read through the whole article at this time, but it appears to be reasonably complete in terms of coverage. I will move your request to the bottom of the list on the WikiProject page to re-cycle it in the queue. PKT(alk) 16:58, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed modifications

[edit]

Propose updating the article as follows:

  • bring structure into line with WP:USCITIES
  • overhaul the history section, it has almost no refs; see what's over the fr-wp
  • expand economy & infrastructure if good refs can be found; it's an important city in Quebec
  • baseball section may be too detailed
  • continue to improve on the references many of which are old and crufty
  • update census with 2021 if poss
  • Toponymy section may not be necessary --Cornellier (talk) 00:55, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
