In Senate elections, the two candidates who obtain the highest number of votes in their respective county are elected.
The 15 candidates who finished first (known as 'Senior Senators') will serve a nine-year term, while the remaining 15 candidates who finished second (known as 'Junior Senators') will serve a six-year term.
This makes no sense. If this is correct, then the Senior Senators' terms will not end in the same year as the Junior Senators. The Senior Senators elected in 2005 would hold their office until 2014, while the Junior Senators' terms would end in 2011.
The only way I can make sense of this is that every 18 years (2005 being hte most recent such year), when the Senior and Junior Senators' elections co-incide, they run together, with the candidate with more votes being Senior, and the 2nd most being Junior, while in other years, only 15 senators run for office.
Is my guess correct, or is the information given here completely wrong, or what? Nik42 05:17, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
