Conflict of interest
[edit]I have added the "Conflict of interest" tag to this article, as its creator has also said (in an edit summary removing the previously added "copyvio" speedy-delete template) that he is the webmaster of the site from which the text is drawn, a site devoted to the subject. I feel that the COI tag should remain until additional editors have reviewed, wifikied, and ensured NPOV in this article. Robertissimo 16:22, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
I have done this.
[edit]I have reviewed, wikified it, and removed some of the large amount of peripheral material that we usually do not have in faculty articles. DGG 19:45, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
replacement of db tag
[edit]I copy from user talk. :
DGG, thank you for your edit. Although the article on Satya_Vrat_Shastri is quite informative, the main contributor, User:Rsbj66, is known to be spreading articles related to Hindu/Indian studies to promote his own website(s) and ultimately his music. The said user cites himself as a resource and that is {{originalresearch}}. You have not cited any other sources either, so the artile should remain tagged as original research. As for the speedy deletion, the article is still salvageable if it does not refer to Rsbj66 (A.k.a. Richard Shaw Brown) - the referral makes it a self promoting spam article. So, until that is done, I must retag the article. -- Emana 19:59, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- An editorial dispute of this sort does not belong on any deletion process. In particular, Speedy is only for uncontroversial deletions, not for disputes over content. Discussions over content belong on the talk page of the article. The only information included relating to Brown is the authorship of a book. I have tagged that section with NPOV. which should satisfy your concern. His own website, about which you complain, is not mentioned. If the book exists, and is about him, the link seems appropriate to me. If you think otherwise, your proper course to remove the part about the book, and then the question can be discussed on the talk page of the article. - DGG, thanks for your reply. Yes, you are absolutely correct in that this kind of dispute should not be taken care of by speedy deletions. But please explain why you have removed the original research tag... as the University of Delhi site does not directly show any information on Satya Vrat Shastri - perhaps a different page? Also, can you help to cite specifically where the list of awards was compiled from? Currently, the most reliable source is the Dr's own site, which may be considered promotional. Salvaging an article beats deleting them any day. -- Emana 20:33, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- My preliminary thoughts on the concerns you raise.
- OR. Assembling materials from available sources is not OR. What would be OR was if I went to India to examine the relevant university archives. Similarly if I did the same at the american school were he was a visiting professor. All WP articles are assembled from sources.
- RS The link I gave at UDelhi is not to their main page, just to avoid possible objections, I linked to the page for the dept., includes the paragraph:
The Department is rich in both creative and critical talent. Among the notable works done by the teachers of the Department may be mentioned the collection of poems, the Urvisanah and prose writings the Anatamargah by Dr. Krishan Lal. Among the critical works more prominent are those by Sh.Shiv Narayan Shastri and Dr.Ram Murti Sharma , Prof. Devendra Mishra, Prof. Dipti Tripathi, Prof.M.M. Agrawal, Prof.Usha Choudhuri and Prof. Avanindra Kumar. Prof. Pushpendra Kumar, Former Head of the Department of Sanskrit and Prof.M.I. Khan, Professor of the Department in South Delhi Campus have been awarded with the Prestigious National award namely the Certificate of Honor by the President of India in the year 2000 and 2001 respectively. This award was earlier given to Prof.R.V. Joshi and Prof.Satyavrat Shastri also. Thus, the department has a long list of illustrious scholars who have contributed significantly in their fields of specialization.
- This avoids the main hazard, that he might not exist or have a connection with the university. As for the details of his awards and publications, his own site is considered a RS, go check BLP. It would not be a RS source for anything in controversy. What's in controversy here--I edited it to be as dry and straight forward a bio as possible. I rewrite a lot of academic bios, many of them don't know how to select, and say either too much or too little. I thought some of it was out of proportion and i removed all of the awards that just said Honour., etc. and kept those that said anything like all-India, etc. without a specific name. For most of the Sanskrit awards I couldn't tell from the names, so I listed the most recent on the grounds they'd be the most important, and asked for local experts to review this. I removed all opinion, and added the sentence "internationally known" for it is objective: he received awards, honorary degrees, and visiting faculty appointments in a number of different countries. I sorted out his publications. This is more or less what i usually do with academic bios. I have only 3 times encountered an apparently false entry on a CV, one was a parapsychologist, and two were politicians.
- This is enough to establish the article. Details can be discussed on its talk page. DGG 23:35, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
I checked the WHOIS info on the owner of the domain name, satyavrat-shastri.net. Sorry to ruin it but the Prof's homepage seems to be maintained by User:Rsbj66 (A.k.a. Richard Shaw Brown. If not for his past actions, I wouldn't be so reluctant to let it pass. Richard's method of research troubles me because there is no verifiable source other than him. Only if he could let other contributors have a swing at his articles... -- Emana 02:15, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi, I just added a few outside references from WWW on his ref. It's not organized yet. If anyone does as a search for "Satya Vrat Shastri" on the WWW there are lots of links and references from the world over. I just happen to be his student and I built his site for him based on Information I could get from him. It is not related to me nor my business and music. Some how Emana has developed an idea that my contributions are a conspiracy to trick Wikipedia. If I would have known what a delusion would arise I would not have bothered to waste my valuable time. I thought I was helping Wikipedia. But then this "conspiracy theory" comes to a boil and Emana is searching for ways to block my contributions. I am a contributer... that's all!!! There is NO plot.--Rsbj66 11:42, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
Here is a link to recent news about Prof Shastri and HRH Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand http://www.hindu.com/2005/11/20/stories/2005112013720300.htm Thanks for the help. He is a great man--Rsbj66 19:54, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- Richard, thanks for your insight on my agenda. There is no conspiracy, as I am acting alone to guide you to clean up your act. If other contributors agree, that's their opinion. If you have external independant resources, fine, I'll leave you alone. If not, I have to point it out so you can improve the articles. You are not helping yourself if you declare ignorance as an excuse to dismiss the rules that maintain civility on Wikipedia. By the way, if you've read through the rules, you'd know that Wikipedia is not interested in the "truth". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Emana (talk • contribs) 16:39, 30 January 2007 (UTC).
- Also, are you sure that that site actually refers to the correct person? Do people spell their names in many different ways in India because of pronunciation differences like in other former British colonies, like in Hong Kong? Or is it that THIS article is spelled wrong? Should we add more AKA's? -- Emana 17:35, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
- Well, in this case , the article info matches the rest of the bio, and the variant name is used on the official university page. It would be necessary to postulate that there were 2 Sanskrit scholars of such similar names in the same department of the same university at the same time. DGG 06:40, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
---Hi Emana, please excuse misunderstanding...as they say in Thailand, "mai pen aray" (never mind). I appreciate your help. I not expert with coding, I checked that article , "Sahatri", that is a typo by the news paper article. It's him, one and only. The book, Journey of a Savant, was designed and published by me in honour of his 76 th birthday (big deal in India) as he wanted to catalog his works of a life time. I got all info from him and created the book. The ISBN 974-93384-0-5 It is a lage format hard bound book with ISBN. A search of the web will reveal loads of 3rd party praises of Prof Shastri, but he alone is the keeper of his life records. I would rather let others - who are Wiki experts, improve this article, by searching the WWW. I have been advised to leave my contributions alone and let others improve them. I have given the start. Same with Richard Shaw Brown it now has 16 references, for everything. Please remove the "delete" code if possible, as I think it is pretty all right now. Best wishes--Rsbj66 22:26, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- I was able to help with the present article, even though he is an academic in a different tradition than my own, but I have insufficient knowledge to deal with the other article. All I can say is the usual: a few good third party quotes will save it, and self-published books do not count for much.DGG 01:39, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
