Name of disambig page

[edit]

If San Sebastián is judged to be the primary use of this name (and I have no opinion on that either way), then this page should definitely be at San Sebastian (disambiguation), and this title redirected to San Sebastián. The tilde is important in the name of the city, but I would say it is rarely used by people searching for San Sebastian on here (searching for any of the San Sebastians). Does anyone object if I change it? Jdcooper (talk) 11:53, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

San SebastianSan Sebastian (disambiguation) – To make way for San Sebastian page to redirect to San Sebastián Jdcooper (talk) 13:35, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 21:18, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's true, but most of the meanings on that list have the same spelling as San Sebastián, which is not a disambig page. As noted above, I don't have a strong opinion on whether the Basque San Sebastian is the dominant meaning, but if it is, San Sebastian should redirect there, as the tilde is not sufficient as disambiguation. If it's not the dominant meaning, then San Sebastián should also redirect to this page, as most of the San Sebastian's on the list use the tilde. So either way, the current situation is daft. Discussion

[edit]

The current page naming for San Sebastians is odd. Using a tilde as a disambiguation for the Basque San Sebastian is insufficient because 1) the majority of the San Sebastians listed at the disambig page also use a tilde, and 2) the most natural search term for English speakers is without the tilde. I propose that either:

  1. If the Basque San Sebastian is the dominant/primary use, then San Sebastian should redirect to the article about it at San Sebastián, and the disambiguation list should be moved to San Sebastian (disambiguation).
  2. If the Basque San Sebastian is not the dominant primary use, then San Sebastián should redirect to San Sebastian and the article about the Basque San Sebastian should go to either San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa or San Sebastián, Basque Country.

I don't have a strong opinion about the primary use, but I would tend towards option 2 to avoid eurocentrism. However, I definitely support changing the current page name format. Please add your thoughts here! Jdcooper (talk) 09:56, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for showing an interest. I do not have a set opinion on these nuances either. That San Sebastián should redirect to a disambiguation page is fine with me since there are so many. In that respect, statistics play a major part, I agree. Regards Iñaki LL (talk) 18:39, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
