Title
[edit]The current (2008) Edition of Who's Who gives his title as "Dr" rather than "Professor". Brunton (talk) 15:32, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- There is some level of ambiguity here - Fortey spent almost his entire career at the NHM, which can't elevate academics to professorships because it is not a degree-granting institution. The title "professor" in this case stems I think from a temporary professorship at the University of Bristol which Fortey held some time ago. I believe it is customary once one is awarded a professorship to use it in perpetuity regardless of future career changes, although by no means does this universally occur. Nonetheless, it would be reasonable to describe him both as "professor" and as "doctor" - it depends on whichever one he self identifies with really. He's certainly perfectly entitled to call himself a prof if he wants to, as is anybody else, including his wiki entry. Badgerpatrol (talk) 15:43, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- Who's Who is compiled from questionnaire responses from its subjects, so it is probable that the title given there is the one he prefers. Brunton (talk) 16:32, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
