[edit]

Can someone more expert than me tidy up some of the photographs maybe so that they appear in some sort of gallery acoss the page rather than going down, please ? 213.123.135.235 (talk) 00:49, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved the phtographs around and it looks a bit better but any other suggestions are welcome. 213.123.135.235 (talk) 04:05, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Biker Biker for the caption trim and the retention of French word-accenting. The huge text gap caused by shifting all photographs to the right is preventable by photo-sandwiching (good phrase !) so this has been reverted to. I notice other wiikipedia pages like Triumph Engineering or Madame Tussauds use a 'Gallery' across the page so readers can enjoy many photographs and I shall look into as to how that is done to tidy up the bottom line. Cheers 213.123.135.235 (talk) 12:39, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery created - done ! 77.101.71.153 (talk) 16:45, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Biker Biker, I've reverted to part-sandwiching the text as the text gaps caused by shifting all photos to the right are unattractively huge. Unless there's another way of closing these huge gaps, 'part-sandwiching' will have to remain to tidy up the page.213.123.135.235 (talk) 00:57, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Biker Biker, I'd be grateful if you could extend your usual courtesy of using the talk page before editing pages as I'm sure you'll agree that there is no pressing urgency to eliminate part-sandwiching. Moving a photo to the gallery to close up text gaps and retain your preferred right-side photo grouping is a solution. The French police photo illustrates the European nature of the vent and shows the extensive Elf advertising and spectator interest of that year too. 213.123.135.235 (talk) 01:28, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The manual of style is quite clear about images in articles. They should not dominate - Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia consisting of prose, it is not a gallery of images. A few images can clearly add value to the article, but when there are more images than text something needs to be done. That is why the link to Wikimedia Commons is provided. I have put all the images into the same category so that a single link can provide the reader with an easy and convenient way to view all the images relating to the topic. --Biker Biker (talk) 01:31, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Biker Biker for your explanation. I like your use of a large introductory illustraive photograph at the top (excellent choice of shot). I agree that the 'riding' photos show spectator interest and riding terrain and the GB police shot also clearly shows the critical Elf sponsorship. The link is useful but,as you stated earlier, a gallery wasn't unreasonable although I'll give further thought on the matter. There is still a text gap though but as it's between topics, it's not as offensive to the eye. Can you kindly link searches for 'Rallye Des Pyrenees' with 'Circuit Des Pyrenees' and 'Pau-San Sebastian Rally' as they are all essentially the same event ? 213.123.135.235 (talk) 01:49, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Biker Biker, nice work: article looks tighter than a hairpin on the Aubisque ! Text box and larger introductory illustrative photo really work as devices. Interested in your choice of photos and eager to read your reasoning behind them. I think the Bois photo shows competitor route familiarisation as there is no race number on the bike and I'm told, the French police are actually German ! Cheers & good night 213.123.135.235 (talk) 02:13, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone more exert than me kindly link 'Circuit Des Pyrenees' and 'Pau-San Sebastian Rally' with this 'Rallye Des Pyrenees' as they are the same thing so that those looking for information of these events are redirected here ? 213.123.135.235 (talk) 00:49, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done. --Biker Biker (talk) 02:15, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Top man ! Cheers 213.123.135.235 (talk) 02:19, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I know the {{Page needed}} tags are kind of repetitive, but it makes it easier to clear them one at a time, and avoids a big banner at the top for a minor issue. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 02:18, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Any more info

[edit]

Hi

I am John Gaut's son Chris and my Dad was a competitor in these events he no.24 with the white helmet with the British Police team. I have more photos and information if you require. I attended these events as a child with the Police Team. John is unfortunately disabled from a motorcycle accident while on duty 23 years ago.

I am sorry to hear of your father’s disability. Please do add photos to the Wikimedia commons photo page for this topic. Thank you 2A00:23C8:8801:9201:209F:C2D6:8F96:B1BF (talk) 06:00, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
