Definitely not actually their proposal, it has been editorialized

[edit]

This page states

The proposal states that the project will produce “169 tons of particulate matter” and“ 69 tons of the [the particulate matter will be] PM 2.5,” a particle known to “cause respiratory and heart problems, as well as contribute to premature birth”.

The actual proposal does not talk at all about respiratory or heart problems. PM 2.5 is not a kind of particle like an element or chemical, it is a particle size. The cars in nearby cities produce more than 69 tons of PM 2.5, yet the premature birth rate is lower in cities. While I can see why someone might be concerned if they live right next to it, I think it's dishonestly presented. Similarly they talk about the CO2 emissions to produce lithium (presumably for climate change) but don't point out how the proliferation of electric cars has a net reduction in CO2, especially if the cars run on renewables. The article also touches on hexane production as a concern, but fails to share the same concerns about automotive and manufacturing hexane production for other factories and mines in the county. I think the article represents factual information in a way to create a particular impression of risk that was not given to other sources of pollution which produce the same kinds of pollutants in similar amounts. A lot of the pm 2.5 and hexane are going to be produced by burning gasoline. 136.61.99.225 (talk) 06:40, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
