Ancestry of Parvatibai

[edit]

According to the novel 'Shikast', Parvatibai belonged to Kolhatkar family from Pen. Also, Sadashivrao Bhau and Parvatibai had no issue according to this novel. However, there is a page on one Kashibai that states that she was daughter of Sadashivrao Bhau Peshwa and Parvatibai.

If anyone knows more on this, please I urge you to discuss.

It is true that Parvatibai was from the family of Kolhatkar's in Pen. She and Sadashiv Rao Bhau Peshwa had an issue which no one knows was a boy or a girl, however, the ward died when it was an infant. There is no proof that Parvatibai was treated as adopted child of Chattrapati Shahu and came from other caste. In those days it was not at all possible that a brahmin who is in the center of power will marry a girl who is from other caste. Another argument is already the Peshwa family was humiliated by Brahmins of Pune and Satara for Bajirao I having relations with Mastani. The entire family was out casted by the Dharmasabha. Hence, it is of remote possibility that she was from other caste.

Probably she might have been close to Chattrapati Shahu as her husband was Peshwa representative in Satara Darbar. However, she neither had administrative powers nor was she treated as representative of Peshwa's. When accompanied her husband to Panipat for the war against Abdalli(which was lost by Marathas) her husband died their, however, there was a controversy about his death. For entire her life she denied that her husband had died and refused to be a widow. However, she was mentally ill as there were proofs of death of her husband. In her lifetime atleast thrice there were rumors of her husband being alive. Twice clons of Sadashiv Rao Bhau hit Pune which created a state of confusion in the then political situation of the state.

She saw many ups ad downs in the Maratha empire and died when Sawai Madhavrao was in power. She died in Pune due to phemonia and was treated as Sati of Sadashivrao Bhau after her death. She was creamted in Pune, however, the Marathas were not in a state to erect any monument of her. Besides, she was not so important in the administration. Her after death rituals were done at Pen.

Pilgrimmage to Kurukshetra

There is no evidence to show she went to Kurukshetra ahead of the Maratha armies.

Her date of death given as 1763 is wrong.

Much of the information seems based on a novel based on the history of Panipat and not factual.
