I think Novicka's clarification was a good addition and would be helpful for people who did a search for "Scandinavian diaspora" and ended up on this page of Wikipedia. Right now, the first Google result for the term is Wikipedia's category "Scandinavian diaspora", which would be much less helpful to somebody seeking relevant information. It is an excellent effort, but without references, it is also 'original research'. That's one of the original points I was making in the AfD. The recommendation from Wikipedia is that lists start within an article and get separated out when there is too much in the article. This page is taking the reverse approach, and I believe the reason why is because the creator of it has a POV bias on naming things diasporas. I know that the term "Scandinavian diaspora" is found in various books and whatnot, but without some additional work, this article is simply not even at stub level. -- Avanu (talk) 01:29, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This type of "disambiguation page" is apparently called a "Set Index Article", relevant policy at WP:SETINDEX. Two of the three set index pages that policy references are List of peaks named Signal Mountain and USS Enterprise. Neither of those has any references. You do not need references to know that a ship named "USS Enterprise" belongs on a list of ships named "USS Enterprise." You do not need references to know that an article titled "Foo diaspora," where Foo is one of the Scandinavian nationalities, belongs on a list of Scandinavian diasporas. Finally, your conjecture that this article was created for a bad reason has absolutely no bearing on whether or not this article should be deleted. You should AGF about the article's author and discuss the article itself. We do not AfD potentially useful articles because they need more work.Sharktopustalk02:16, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would just mention its not a failure to 'assume good faith' to mention the POV bias. It was clearly stated by the article's creator here in great detail. Nothing wrong with that by itself, it's simply his preference, but articles still need to follow Wiki guidelines. -- Avanu (talk) 02:47, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
After looking at a bunch of Google book results that talk about "Scandinavian diaspora," the results fall into two different groups. One set of authors is talking about the Viking expansion. A different set is using the term to talk in a unified way about much more recent emigrations and emigrant communities whose origin was in one of more of the Scandinavian countries. We don't have a unified article on this topic at the moment, what we have is a bunch of individual articles Swedish diaspora, Norwegian diaspora, etc.
So maybe what we need is a disambiguation page rather than a set index page after all. We have two different concepts each of which is called by some people "Scandinavian diaspora." And under the more modern of those two concepts, we don't have a unified article to point people to but instead we have a bunch of articles about emigrants and their descendants who originated in just one of those Scandinavian countries.
MAYBE what would work would be to have this article talk a bit about modern Scandinavian emigration and emigrants, based on WP:RS assuming we could find some, then have a "See also", listing the specific articles. At the top of the page we could have one of those "for" templates reading "for|Scandinavian emigrations during the Viking Age|Viking expansion."
It stopped being a set index when someone converted into paragraphs and sections with "{{main}}" on them. Set indexes are a basic sort of list, like a disambiguation page, but allowed to contain extended definitions. It's now some odd sort of extended list, and no longer a set index. That two different sets of diaspora are referred to by this term means a disambiguation page for those two sets, or a set index for those two sets works, linking to the two different population migrations and their sets of articles. This page should still be either a set index or a disambiguation page. 65.93.12.101 (talk) 10:46, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have also noticed a third usage of "Scandinavian diaspora" to refer to diasporic communities now living in northern Europe rather than to emigration and emigrants from Scandinavia. See, for example, "Scandinavian Nepali diaspora or articles about actions by a "Scandinavian diaspora" of Rwandans. But unless this usage gets quite a bit more common, I doubt we'll have seekers looking for articles about it here, which we also don't have. Sharktopustalk11:47, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is not a reliable source, you should know better. The reference that sentence uses says the opposite. There are two definitions according to Webster's and Encyclopedia Britannica. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 01:45, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why is RAN removing the uncat tag? This article is clearly uncategorized. The only categories here are maintenance categories, not actual content categories. 65.93.12.101 (talk) 05:14, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
