The number and identity of species in Malvaviscus is unclear. The latest revision that I've seen, Turner & Mendenhall, Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 80(2): 439-457 (1993), recognises 4 species, but rejects or excludes 2, M. candidus and M. palmatus, of the 3 species recognised by Schery's earlier monograph (Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 29(3): 183-244 (1942)). As I have only seen the abstract I am unaware of the grounds on which this is done. M. penduliflorus is recognised as a cultivar, rather than as species. Again I am unaware of the grounds on which this is done.
Kubitzki & Bayer, Fam. Gen. Vasc. Pl. V (2003) appear to follow Turner & Mendenhall. Lavateraguy 21:00, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
