Louisville proper or Jefferson County?

I have to say I really don't understand your [LlyII's] position on this redirect. Louisville Metro = Louisville, Kentucky. You are basically redirecting people to a small article that they don't intend to go to when searching. As for what you're saying about government in the edit summary, there is no Jefferson County government. I see no basis for this redirect that corresponds to the current reality. Now, I'm not saying everyone is sensible. Obviously not everyone is. But if people intend to link to Louisville, they (generally speaking) link to [[Louisville]]. (Then, when they see the problem with that, they link to [[Louisville, Kentucky]]...) If they're linking to Louisville Metro, they are specifically looking for the greater Louisville area or the larger municipal government and not the main article. If the article at Jefferson County doesn't meet your high standards, you can always expand or improve it. But at least the first few links I was looking at were explicitly not looking for Louisville generally but for (admittedly a better treatment of) the content at Jefferson County. — LlywelynII 01:28, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I do understand your concern, though. Two solutions would be:

1) Not to revert to [[Louisville, Kentucky]], but to change the redirect to [[Louisville, Kentucky#Government and politics]], and to include [[Jefferson County...

The alternative would be to turn this into a dab page between Neighborhoods of Louisville, Kentucky, and Government of Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville Metro is not a synonym for Government of Louisville, Kentucky, which is a subarticle page for Louisville, Kentucky which goes into depth about the governmental function of Louisville, Kentucky (Louisville Metro). It is today a synonym for Louisville, Kentucky, whether people are meaning to go there are not. A dab page would be moderately agreeable, if anyone honestly thinks there would be any confusion. But moving Government of Louisville, Kentucky to "Louisville Metro" is a warping of that article's subarticle/in-depth purpose for the main Louisville, Kentucky article. On the talk page for WP:Lou, you stated "All incoming links to Louisville Metro I've looked at are looking for the governmental entity." I just wanted to note that this will not always necessarily be the case, nor does it deal with search. Also, the bolded term in Government of Louisville, Kentucky was incorrect until the fix I just made this morning -- that may have led linkers astray. I went through the uses that weren't tying this term to government, and indeed, most of them intended to go to Louisville, Kentucky, so I updated them directly. There was one that appeared to mean Louisville metropolitan area and yet another one that meant Louisville Metro Council when referring to a member of it. Agreeing with Stevie here, "Louisville Metro" is a proper name of a specific place, and that place is Louisville, Kentucky. I think it is a reasonably unambiguous term, at least in regard to what is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC meaning of the term. To refer explicitly to the general metropolitan area, one would use "Louisville metropolitan area" rather than "Louisville Metro" (with capitalization). To refer to the government or politics of the place, one should use a phrase that explicitly refers to government or politics. If there are Wikipedia internal cross-references that don't obey that convention, they should be changed, and they probably only exist because of the vagaries of Wikipedia editing history. —BarrelProof (talk) 17:43, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
