Busiest city
[edit]I have removed a paragraph from an anonymous contributor claiming that Montreal was the busiest city by aircraft movements by comparing Mirabel and Trudeau (and presumably, St. Hubert) combined against Pearson -- the numbers simply don't add up. Pearson and Buttonville alone have significantly more traffic than Trudeau, St-Hubert, and Mirabel combined. David 13:40, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
2004 Numbers
[edit]I have restored 2004 numbers for passenger movements. 2005 numbers were added by user, 70.81.177.216, in late 2005 (before official number could possibly have become available) and were NOT REFERENCED. These numbers do not match any official documentation that I have seen and do not match projections either. I think it is best not to get ahead of ourselves and not post data from "the future". At least, not without MAKING IT CLEAR THAT THEY ARE ONLY ESTIMATES. I think that these numbers should not be updated before accurate 2005 numbers come available. --Tyson2k 06:34, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
Movement breakdown
[edit]Is there any interest in a further breakdown of aircraft movements? What I am referring to is the difference between itinerant and local movements from the TP577. With them you get:
- Itinerant
- Toronto/LB Pearson International 411,609
- Vancouver International 322,986
- Calgary International 228,915
- Montréal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau Intl 208,329
- Winnipeg International 129,327
- Local
- Boundary Bay 114,4991
- Abbotsford 89,685
- Calgary/Springbank 80,550
- Toronto/Buttonville Municipal 73,314
- Montréal/St-Hubert 62,099
or is this just some esoteric numbers that will mean nothing to most people? CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 20:17, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
- It's interesting because it distinguishes the GA airports from the major transport airports, but I'm not sure that it will make sense to most readers. David 01:29, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- With a short paragraph explaining the difference, it would likely make sense. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.48.37.182 (talk) 00:13, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Update
[edit]Many of the stats are out of date. They should be updated with the Annual Report, not the Preliminary. [1]

Calgary vs Montreal
[edit]I don't see how we are considering YUL as busier than YYC in 2008. Based on the number provided by Montreal Airport in their latest statistics release, they had less passengers than Calgary in 2008. I know that that article says otherwise, but I don't think the ranking should be changed until Montreal officially publishes its exact numbers for 2008, if that story is even true.
Furthermore, Airports Council International ranks YYC ahead of YUL.[2] Thankyoubaby (talk) 04:46, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
Update
[edit]This page is in horrible shape and needs to be totally updated. Alot of the stats seem to be off and there are airports left out of the lists that should be there and most of the information isn't cited. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.116.120.203 (talk) 23:27, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
Stats
[edit]The stats for 2009 don't seem to be correct. YYZ is listed at 28 million passengers, but actually the figure is 30 million passengers according to YYZ's website. Same for all other airports. Check with each airport's website. FlyAirCanada (talk) 14:23, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- The stats are correct. They are sourced from here. By using one single source for them it becomes much easier, and slightly more accurate, to compare. While the TC stats may not be 100% accurate neither are the airports own numbers which are somewhat padded. Enter CBW, waits for audience applause, not a sausage. 09:12, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- The different airport articles on here and all other websites display numbers from the Airport website. This is the only place where I have seen numbers from Statscan. It's better to use numbers from a single source, which is the airport website so people don't get confused. FlyAirCanada (talk) 16:47, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- The airport articles uses the airport figures for passengers because they tend to be available sooner than the StatsCan numbers. However the same articles use the StatsCan numbers for aircraft movements. They are used because there is a wider range of airports available and it is better for comparisons to have the same source for all figures. During most of the year the figures for only the top ten (mainly because not all the other 10 are available from the airport) are sourced from the airports site. By using one source here you can make a better comparison from one airport to another without wondering what criteria each airport used to count the passengers. In a few weeks I expect that the preliminary figures for 2010 will start to appear, both here and in the airport articles and I see that Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport already has the 2010 numbers. So this page will be the only one with any 2009 numbers at all which means that sourcing it to one page is easier as in some cases the sources for 2009 from each airport may get moved or vanish. By the way some of the numbers you added here don't match the airport article either, Toronto and Vancouver. Enter CBW, waits for audience applause, not a sausage. 17:21, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- Because the numbers are from YYZ's and YVR's websites and have been revised. The numbers on the YYZ and YVR articles here are not updated. And all of the airports display their passenger numbers from the 5-10 years so I dont know why you want still use numbers from Statscan. All news reports, charts, etc. display 30 million passengers for YYZ 2009, not 28 million. I have never seen any news article or anything where Statscan numbers are reported. Even on GTAA's website, 30 million is reported for 2009. Even if the 2009 numbers on airport articles are only displayed for 1 year, it still a long time and people get confused as they see 30 million on the YYZ article and 28 million here for 1 year. Makes no sense. FlyAirCanada (talk) 18:43, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
- It does make sense. By using one sourced for all the airports you can compare one with another. If each airport uses the its own numbers then you can't compare them due to not knowing what standards each has used. This falls under Wikipedia:No original research#Primary, secondary and tertiary sources. Enter CBW, waits for audience applause, not a sausage. 10:07, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
- I've added in the airport figures as well. Enter CBW, waits for audience applause, not a sausage. 04:49, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
Why 16?
[edit]Just wondering why for 2013 it is the top 16, while all the previous years have been top 15? Seems like Fort Mac promotion. Ravendrop 05:44, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Inflated air passenger traffic figures
[edit]I have identified discrepancies in the passenger counts listed on the “List of the busiest airports in Canada” page. For example, Toronto Pearson International Airport reports 44,800,000 passengers in 2023, while Statistics Canada reports 43,716,866 passengers for the same period.
To enhance accuracy and consistency, I propose that this page rely on data from Statistics Canada’s “Air passenger traffic at Canadian airports, annual” dataset. This dataset provides comprehensive and standardized data on passengers enplaned and deplaned at Canadian airports.
Statistics Canada collects this data through the Airport Activity Survey, which gathers information from air carriers operating in Canada. Carriers are required to file data via the Electronic Collection of Air Transportation Statistics (ECATS), ensuring standardized and reliable reporting.
Using Statistics Canada’s data would provide a consistent and unbiased source for passenger traffic figures, as the data is collected under legal requirements and is less susceptible to potential inflation by individual airport authorities. This approach would improve the accuracy and reliability of the information presented on this page.
For reference, here is the ranking of the top 30 Canadian airports in 2023 based on Statistics Canada’s data:
- Toronto Lester B Pearson International Airport: 43,716,866 passengers
- Vancouver International Airport: 24,260,989 passengers
- Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport: 20,380,075 passengers
- Calgary International Airport: 18,026,031 passengers
- Edmonton International Airport: 7,216,992 passengers
- Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport: 3,985,887 passengers
- Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport: 3,948,739 passengers
- Halifax Robert L Stanfield International Airport: 3,484,501 passengers
- Kelowna International Airport: 1,959,839 passengers
- Victoria International Airport: 1,702,052 passengers
- Québec Jean Lesage International Airport: 1,702,052 passengers
- St. John’s International Airport: 1,255,912 passengers
- Abbotsford International Airport: 1,253,456 passengers
- Saskatoon John G Diefenbaker International Airport: 1,247,034 passengers
- Regina International Airport: 941,711 passengers
- Hamilton Airport: 818,049 passengers
- Thunder Bay Airport: 658,766 passengers
- Moncton Greater Moncton International Airport: 579,106 passengers
- Terrace-Kitimat Northwest Regional Airport: 444,385 passengers
- Prince George Airport: 416,677 passengers
- Yellowknife Airport: 408,764 passengers
- Comox Airport: 372,707 passengers
- Fort McMurray Airport: 362,883 passengers
- Nanaimo Airport: 360,056 passengers
- London Airport: 328,408 passengers
- Fredericton International Airport: 324,901 passengers
- Kamloops Airport: 311,964 passengers
- Deer Lake Airport: 282,599 passengers
- Fort St. John Airport: 271,642 passengers
- Windsor Airport: 186,537 passengers
I recommend updating the page to reflect these figures from Statistics Canada’s dataset to ensure the information is accurate and reliable.
