Updated Photos

[edit]

If anyone knows how to upload photos onto wikipedia, possibly a photo from this link would be more appropriate for Dr. Bluford since all the other astronauts are either in space suits or astronaut jumpsuits. http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/bluford-gs.html

Also, a photo from this link can be added for Mr. Belt since there is no photo of him on the article. http://www.astronautix.com/astros/belt.htm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.204.118.34 (talk) 19:48, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ed Dwight

[edit]

Ed Dwight, who is now a renowned sculptor, was picked by the Kennedy administration to train as an astronaut in 1962, thus making him the first African-American astronaut. I suggest adding him. Thanks.

This is not true. Dwight was a candidate but was not selected or trained as an astronaut. RandomCritic (talk) 11:23, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

On the front cover of Ed Dwight's autobiography it says First Black Astronaut Candidate. http://www.eddwight.com/news_events/news/gift_box/index.htm User:72.237.31.130 (talk) 18:18, 2 May 2010‎

Now that he's been featured on The Astronaut Wives Club and has his own article, I'm going to go ahead and add him here. Not R (talk) 03:19, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Hyphen

[edit]

The name of this list has been moved from African American to African-American to African American and back to African-American: three moves so far. Please stop it. It's completely unimportant whether there's a hyphen or not. And given that the list contains a Cuban cosmonaut (who is "American" in one, broad sense, but not in the sense usually used for African American), and might in the future be expanded to include black astronauts or cosmonauts from African countries, perhaps the best thing to do would be to change it to "List of black astronauts". Mandla Maseko

[edit]

I don't think he's qualified for the list yet but it is worth making a note that Mandla Maseko is set to become the first black African to travel into space (although not the first African). According to this it's a sub-orbital flight. Do they count? Sophie means wisdom (talk) 21:49, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez

[edit]

Shouldn't this list start with the first black person in space, Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez? Right now he's consigned to the end, almost as an afterthought. I don't this is fair given his achievement.

No African-American astronaut on board a Soyuz

Isn't that odd ? Hektor (talk) 18:15, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ed Dwight category

[edit]

Ed Dwight recently took part in a Blue Origin tourist flight to about 100 km above earth, becoming at age 90 the oldest person to travel so far.[1] This does not IMO move him into the category of astronauts who have traveled into space, because Dwight was an astronaut candidate rather than an astronaut.
