Improving this article

Just to let any other interested editors know, I'm gradually rewriting and restructuring this article, hopefully making it more encyclopaedic and in keeping with how an article in Wikipedia should be. -- DMS (talk) 02:13, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Providing references

Guys - when you add bits of info to this article, please provide references. Information that isn't backed up by references to reputable published sources is at risk of being deleted. -- DMS (talk) 22:20, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Drug charges

The phrase "though he claims that was simply to avoid further publicity and harrassment of his family", removed by Transparentbook (talk), was my admittedly somewhat loose paraphrasing of the following quote from the cited reference regarding the charges:

"In 1985, General Court of Justice, Durham County, had charged Modi with kidnapping, assault and possession of 400 grams of cocaine, court documents show. He then entered a 'plea bargain', which is permitted under the US law and allows a reduced punishment without a trial if the accused confesses to his or her crimes.
"Since the case was reported in the press, in order to avoid further publicity, embarrassment, protracted litigation in a foreign country, heavy costs and consequent intervention with his academic career, he entered into plea bargaining," Modi's lawyers wrote in a submission to the Supreme Court."

It seemed to me that the clear implication being made is that he only pleaded guilty in order to shorten proceedings and enable him to enter into plea bargaining, for the reasons given. I'm also sure I read a more direct reference to it in one of the other cited references, but can't find that at the moment, so can't be 100% certain. If I find that, I'll quote it here also.

Gujarati?

Nothing in the article says that he is Gujju or born in Gujju nagar...He's from Rajasthan right? That's why he became Rajasthan Cricket Chairman....and there is Rajasthan Royals IPL team. 116.240.160.87 (talk) 12:23, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

{{editsemiprotected}} Remove 'category : Gujarati People' as he is not Gujarati, he is marwadi. His Grandfather 'Gujar Mal Modi' was marwadi as per wikipedia.

Hpatel9901 (talk) 04:17, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Could you please add a reliable source here to back up that statement? BejinhanTalk 04:24, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Edit conflicted on the action here. There's no source for the current category, and the linked grandfather article paints the picture that the OP suggests, so I have removed the category. Any category addition should be reliably sourced. —SpacemanSpiff 04:27, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

{{editsemiprotected}} grammatical errors need correcting! Amspock (talk) 08:42, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Not done. As the helpme template states, it is only meant to be used in combination with specific requests. Therefor a general statement such as "grammatical errors need correcting!" is not actionable by me. Please be more specific what has to be changed, and how it has to be changed. Allegations of corruption - Addition request from Lordgokz, 22 April 2010

{{editsemiprotected}} On 21 April 2010, BCCI Chairman Sharad Pawar asked for Lalit Modi to quit from his post as IPL commissioner and chairman. Lalit Modi however refused and is set to face all the allegations against him at the IPL governing council meeting on April 26 where a decision is expected [1] Lordgokz (talk) 06:34, 22 April 2010 (UTC)Lordgokz

Not done for now: This is not a specific description of a request in the form of "please change X to Y" as is stated in the instructions on the editsemiprotected template. Furthermore, you need to cite a reliable source for the above information. -- œ 10:06, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Schools

Lalit modi studied at St. Joseph's College, Nainital for sure (I was his junior) and later I suppose he went to Lawrence School, Sanawar instead of Bishop Cotton Shimla (need to confirm this). He didn't got very good score in SAT he got a perfect score (I was in his school). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.102.163.130 (talk) 06:50, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

One of the date in the wikipage of Lalit Modi is wrongly given. Modi was suspended as Commisioner of IPL on '26-Apr-2010' and not '26-May-2010'

Requests to edit semi-protected articles must be accompanied by reference(s) to reliable sources.
For now, I have removed the date altogether. If you can find a reference for the correct date, please re-request. Thanks,  Chzz  ►  11:04, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

{{editsemiprotected}} In the sentence that claims he is a vegetarian and a teetotaler, I wanted to add that he is a smoker. This is relevant to the sentence and for reference, he can been seen smoking in this picture: http://www.cricinfo.com/india/content/image/456963.html?object=242443;page=1

Kelvinj (talk) 05:28, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, a picture like that is not a reliable source. Maybe he is just holding the cigarette; maybe he used to smoke, etc; also, drawing conclusions from an image is a kind of original research. We would require a better reliable source.  Chzz  ►  09:55, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

References & Duplicates

1) The reference [5] & [6] denote the same URL, which is useless.

2) Modi's joint venture with Disney & Fashion TV are repeated twice, without a reason. This can be removed.

This page quotes a lot from lalitmodi.com - self promoting Lalit Modi's point of view. He has ample opportunities to challenge before the judicial system and failed to do so. The denials by Lalit Modi on various news channels/media should not be included. Please refer to WP:PROMOTION. Anyone objecting to such deletion, Please discuss. Else it will be removed.Neil2000 (talk) 13:45, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Why no mention that he is a fugitive from Indian justice?

Agreed. As per this link (http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/charges-against-lalit-modi/1/229233.html) these are the following charges against Lalit Modi.

J mareeswaran (talk) 10:55, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Summary of charges against Lalit Modi

The Enforcement Directorate, which has issued a blue notice and revoked Lalit Modi's passport, has slapped 11 notices against him and the BCCI in 2011 and again in 2012 for tax evasion, money laundering and misappropriation of funds under FEMA.

The BCCI, meanwhile, slapped 22 charges against him in 2010 while sacking him as IPL chief and filed a criminal case against him in the Chennai High Court. Some of the main charges against him are:

Misappropriation of funds worth Rs.460 crore

Criminal case filed by the BCCI in October 2010 which pertains to misappropriation of funds including broadcast and internet rights amounting to Rs.425 crore, players security fees worth Rs.15 crore and airtime value of Rs.20 crore.

FEMA violations to the tune of Rs.60 crore

Slapped with ED notice for administering an account in South Africa without requisite permission and clearance from the finance ministry required under FEMA and for dealings relating to awarding contracts during IPL 2 in South Africa.

Flouting bidding rules

As per the BCCI, both Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI had different shareholders when initial bids were submitted and the actual franchise agreement was signed by another person(s). Background of Rajasthan consortium was unknown, suspiciously registered just three months before the team auction. Also, Modi unilaterally approved the change of stakeholders. According to IPL rules, transfer of stakeholders can be done only by the consent of all members of governing council and 5 per cent of transaction fees to go to the board. No trace of documents or transaction money.

Facilitation fee

Alleged as kickback for Lalit Modi for helping Multi Screen Media, Singapore regain the IPL television broadcasting rights for Indian sub-continent after the BCCI terminated its contract on various counts. MSM was sub-let broadcasting rights by World Sports Group and a small legal battle later, the BCCI entered into a fresh agreement with MSM directly and a fee was paid to WSG to let go off its rights. However, banking norms were flouted during the transactions and no taxes were levied on the payment. BCCI allege it was kept in the dark about the renegotiation.

Misuse of authority

Lalit Modi is alleged to have used arm-twisting tactics to help certain bidders and also rigged the bidding the of two new IPL teams. The now-terminated Kochi franchise owner alleged that Modi even tried to bribe him to withdraw his bid.

Defamation suit

Chris Cairns filed a defamation suit in London for making match-fixing allegations against him over twitter. Cairns sued him and won damages worth £90,000. Modi went for an appeal but that was turned down in October 2012.
