Minor Edit

Kyrie Irving was on the losing team, Team Shaq, in the Rising Stars Challenge. [1] Also, in the previous note on Irving's page, it reads as if Bonner scored 23 points. Perhaps the sentence could use some clarification.

I made a few fixes. In addition, the Rising Stars game is no longer a rookies vs. sophomores game; each team has a mix of both rookies and sophomores. Zagalejo^^^ 01:41, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Kyrie Irving has been named the USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year (2014), but the achievement has not been placed under his "Career highlights and awards section." While it is mentioned on Irving's wiki under "International career, it should be under his achievements, as it appears for previous winners such as LeBron James and Kevin Durant. The article says:

"Irving was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia where his father, Drederick Irving, played professional basketball for the Bulleen Boomers."

Kryie made statements on Twitter in regards to the cheating allegations saying that Kehlani did not cheat on him, so it's inaccurate for this article to say otherwise.

This, "In March 2016, Irving was cheated on by former girlfriend R&B singer-songwriter Kehlani, as a picture of her in bed with Canadian singer PartyNextDoor went viral on Instagram." should be changed to reflect the actual situation.

Those tweets have since been deleted, but they still stand. https://twitter.com/CLEsportsTalk/status/715364632228204544/photo/1 http://www.foxsports.com/nba/story/cleveland-cavs-kyrie-irving-rumors-girlfriend-kehlani-cheated-on-him-rapper-partynextdoor-033016 198.189.249.63 (talk) 18:24, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

Was he or was he not traded?

This whole mess is unprecedented, but it brings into question exactly when a player is officially a member of a team. Say the trade is voided; we'd have to remove things from the article such as Category:Boston Celtics players, a category which by nature should never be removed once it's (correctly) added. Same with the infobox, we can't have him playing for the Celtics if he's never played for the Celtics. So it'd have to be removed as well. If the trade is being held up it clearly must mean it hasn't officially happened. Unless it's possible for a trade to be reversed after it happens, in which case Irving's infobox would have to list (by our conventions) that he was a member of the Cavaliers from 2011–2017, the Celtics in 2017, and the Cavaliers from 2017–present. Which would obviously be silly. Lizard (talk) 22:35, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

He is listed as with the Celtics as of now. If the deal is voided then we switch it back to Cavs as if the trade never happened. The category shouldn't be in place yet anyway (they are applied after the player appears in a regulation game), but yes, the Celtics would come out of the infobox. It actually isn't all that complicated. Rikster2 (talk) 23:42, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
Ew. If that's how it works then. Lizard (talk) 00:51, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
@Lizard the Wizard: There have been voided trades before i.e. Donatas Motiejūnas was traded to Detroit in February 2016, but after a failed physical, the trade was voided/rescinded and he was sent back to Houston. It doesn't look like this Irving-Thomas trade is going to come to that as neither team want the other back (Irving burnt bridge with Cavs; Celtics burnt bridge with Thomas). See the latest here. DaHuzyBru (talk) 04:41, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, I also saw this. It would be the most awkward situation on this flat earth we're living on if the trade fell apart and those two had to be sent back. Lizard (talk) 06:18, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
As far as I know, there usually isn't much coverage after teams announce trades about whether players pass their physical. Therefore, it wouldn't make sense to hold up updating on 99% of trades when most of the time we wouldn't know about when the physicals were passed. In the rare instance that it happens, we just make another update that the trade fell through.—Bagumba (talk) 07:17, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

In February 2017, Irving stated, contrary to the fact that the Earth is round, that he believes that the Earth is flat while being interviewed for a podcast, stating "This is not even a conspiracy theory...The Earth is flat. The Earth is flat."[110] In a later interview, he was less forceful in advancing his flat Earth belief, encouraging people to "do their own research" into the topic.[111][112] In September 2017, Irving denied these claims and said that media misunderstood him as he was joking.[113] Irving also stated that he believes in further conspiracy theories, such as the idea that John F. Kennedy was killed by the Federal Reserve, and that the C.I.A. tried to kill Bob Marley.[114]

Please add that, as he said in an interview at the All-Star game, that he simply said all of this to demonstrate that it's sad that the media cares more about what Kyrie thinks about the Earth and its shape, than more important things that are happening around the world. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2607:FEA8:E20:2FB:6555:5971:94C5:F4F3 (talk) 19:09, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Kyrie Irving Nationality

"Read previous. nationality not based on just where a player was born. many cases of when someone was born in a country when a parent was working in that country like in this case. represents USA. nationalty is american. his aus cit is mentioned in article"

I think you are taking a very narrow approach to what constitues nationality. Nationalty and citizenship are synonymous....and he is a citizen of both the US and Australia, hence he is also an Australian and American National. He has never given up or renounced his Australian Citizenship.just because he chose to represent USA does not lesson the fact that he was equally as entitled to represent Australia. The current sports team a player represents does not exclude his other nationalities. If going by the strictest definition of nationality (place of birth) then Irving is Australian only, not American. Thevetran (talk) 03:52, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

I'm somewhat on the fence on this one. While I was an initial user who reverted your "Australian" additions, I can let it go based off such references as this that cites his dual citizenship. I do agree with you, Thevetran, that just because someones chooses to represent a nation internationally, that doesn't change the fact that he/she is a dual citizenship and/or has dual nationality i.e. if Irving had chosen to represent Australia, would we list him as solely Australian – I don't think so. I'm happy to have "American / Australian" listed in the infobox. We have to come to a consensus though and stop this silly back and forth. DaHuzyBru (talk) 04:13, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
Per MOS:BLPLEAD: "Similarly, previous nationalities or the country of birth should not be mentioned in the lead unless they are relevant to the subject's notability." Australia isn't a core part of his notability, and he hasn't played for their national team either. See similar case of Steve Nash being listed as Canadian despite being a dual citizen.—Bagumba (talk) 04:41, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
So that's just for the lead, yeah? Should/could "American / Australian" be listed in the infobox? That's the issue here – "Australian" has so far not been added to the lead. DaHuzyBru (talk) 04:45, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
I consider the infobox as part of the lead (see WP:LEADELEMENTS). If these trivial nationalities aren't notable enough for the lead, I'd say it shouldn't clutter the infobox either.—Bagumba (talk) 06:27, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
Fair enough. I have striked my support for having Australia in the infobox based off your rationale. I do not agree with User:Underbelly 50's rationale for not having it, but per Wikipedia guidelines and an example like Nash, I swing my support for not having "American / Australian" in the infobox (or opening sentence). DaHuzyBru (talk) 06:49, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

As DaHuzyBru mentioned as per wikipedia guidelines is why i am strongly for keeping his nationality on this page only as American as it has always been. And as someone else also mentioned Steve Nash was born in South Africa and left there at one or two years old and grew up in Canada his whole life after that he is only considered Canadian, Tony Parker born in Belgium and at two years old went to France and lived there his whole life and is only considered French, Robert Griffin III born in Japan while parents in military left there at one or two years old but only considered American. DaHuzyBru makes a good point Kyrie has lived his whole life/grew up in USA and represents them. Different if he spent a large part of his life in Australia. I strongly agree that it should stay as it's always been. As per Wikipedia guidelines let's leave it at that. User:Underbelly 50

Under Australian law, nationality and citizenship are synonymous. He is an Australian citizen. Your Steve Nash argument is not synonymous. Though he was born there, he did not hold citizenship. He held British citizenship, which was not debated, and British nationality is much more complex legal matter than Australian. However, under the law of Australia, he is of Australian nationality. Australian law is what matters about his nationality debate. It therefore should be included. The fact that anyone is dismissing Australian law is offensive. Also RGIII is a terrible example because he was born to military serving the country abroad. That's why he is American. Different countries have different laws. Give me an Australian example that contradicts what I have said about Kyrie Irving. capriaf 20:04, June 12, 2018 (UTC)

This isn't a legal document. MOS:BLPLEAD is the relevant guideline. His dual citizenship is mentioned in "Early life" already, so it's not being dismissed.—Bagumba (talk) 20:14, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Lakota heritage

I added information about his Lakota heritage as well as adding it to the list of nationalities. His tribe is a sovereign nation and he actively participates in his tribal heritage both publicly during games and privately with events on his reservation, showing both an active interest and identification as Lakota. Therefore it should be included.  oncamera  (talk page) 11:23, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

@Oncamera: Additions to the nationality field and the unofficial name in indigenous language have been removed. "Lakota" is not a nationality. – Sabbatino (talk) 12:33, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
@Sabbatino: How is his name unofficial? Every Lakota person who has a name has it included on their Wikipedia article so it's a standard on this website. He even introduces himself with that name during NBA games. I am restoring his name at the very least.  oncamera  (talk page) 12:37, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
That field is about nationality for FIBA eligibility. Irving has played for the US, hence its “American.” As for the other info, seems fine to include if reliably sourced Rikster2 (talk) 12:46, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
@Rikster2: I'll accept that usage of the info box nationality, which I didn't know so thank you for clarifying. I find it unreasonable that Sabbatino (talk · contribs) removes his Lakota name and removes him from the Lakota people category saying "he's not Lakota" as it's all well sourced that he is. It's a standard on Wikipedia for enrolled members of a Lakota tribe to be included in that category and also a standard for Lakota people to have their names on their pages, especially as it's a name he uses publicly in basketball games.  oncamera  (talk page) 12:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
The category is fine. The Lakota name is definitely worth including, but it may be a little confusing as presented in the first sentence. As I understand, his name is just “Hela,” not the whole phrase “Hela, Little Mountain”. But that may not be clear to people who only glance at the lead. Can I suggest adding some info about his background into the lead, and working his Lakota name into that context? Zagalejo^^^ 01:57, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
It's standard for Lakota people to have their name included in the opening sentence. I can put quotation marks around the English translation to clarify that it's not the Lakota if it's somehow confusing. If you want to also write a bit that includes his Lakota name and his activism, that would be great although I'm sure some people here might have a problem with that. But again, I don't agree with removing it from the opening sentence in the lead as that's not how it's done for Lakota people here on Wikipedia. That becomes an issue of Native erasure. If people are truly confused by it, they can read his article to learn more as it's sourced in the main body.  oncamera  (talk page) 06:19, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
I understand the problem of Native erasure. I just think sometimes you need to balance that concern with readability. Your recent edit does help clarify things. Zagalejo^^^ 15:03, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
Just to elaborate: I don’t think we should do anything to suppress information on Kyrie’s Lakota heritage. I just think there’s a tendency (throughout all of Wikipedia) to try to say too much in the very first sentence of an article. Certain bits of information would have more room to breathe in their own sentence. Right now, the lead doesn’t clarify where Kyrie’s Lakota name comes from. People may think it was something he was born with, or a translation of his English name. Some additional context in the lead could help for a smoother reading experience. Just my opinion. Zagalejo^^^ 18:47, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

I added a third paragraph to the opening lead that summarizes the things he does outside of competing, which includes the philanthropy he does for his Lakota tribe per your suggestion. Again, I do not see a valid reason to remove his Lakota name from the opening sentence, it's the standard on Wikipedia for Lakota people to include this and it's why the Lakota language template exists.  oncamera  (talk page) 19:26, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Kyrie Irving has a daughter. Azurie Elizabeth Irving. She was born in and lives in Dallas, Texas with her mother, former beauty pageant queen, Andrea Wilson. She's 5, was born on 23rd November, 2015. Shooting guard vs Point guard

Editors keep changing his position to shooting guard (cited) which is getting reverted. He himself acknowledges is his new position per Kyrie Irving tells James Harden, 'You're the point guard, and I'm going to play shooting guard' as Brooklyn Nets settle on roles. Why does it keep getting removed Not per NBA sources if he is the one saying it? Is he not an NBA source?  oncamera  (talk page) 22:25, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

@Oncamera: Irving can claim whatever he wants. The NBA simply lists him as "G" in their reports but that is the case for all guards (G) and forwards (F). Basketball-reference lists him as "point guard". This question should better be asked at WT:NBA, because this situation applies to many players. – Sabbatino (talk) 09:08, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

Player Profile

Irving has been known for being one of the most well rounded scorers in basketball. He has received universal acclaim for his ball handling skills, with many players and analysts touting his as the best of all time. He is also known for his strong finishing ability around the rim, due to his frequency of performing difficult layups and shots. This, combined with his deep skill set and ability to create space in isolation, have led to some players and analysts to claim him as the most skilled player ever. 75.36.199.143 (talk) 00:56, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

Religion categories

Given his recent comments characterizing his belief as an "Omnist" and efforts to claim Jewish and Christian identities, it may be appropriate to remove the "African-American Muslims" category tag from Kyrie Irving's biographical article. It seems clear that Irving does not currently identify as part of the general Islamic religion, despite media coverage of his alleged fasting during Ramadan and his public comments at that point. Irving seems to vacillate often between different religious labels, and it is misleading to include only one religion category tag, especially when that is not the religion he is currently espousing. 130.64.225.3 (talk) 19:11, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

I am not the OP, but ESPN has reported it. Irving and Markieff Morris to the Mavericks; Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and a couple picks to the Nets. Article at the following URL: [2] Overlasting Peace (talk) 18:26, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
Overlasting Peace, but what has ESPN reported? The title says Sources: Nets trading star guard Kyrie Irving to Mavericks (emphasis added). The first sentence of the article says The Brooklyn Nets are trading Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Sunday. and then follows up with "sources said" or "a source said" in every single paragraph after that. That includes the paragraph where it says Irving is expected to arrive for a physical on Monday in Dallas. What if he fails that physical? We can look at Carlos Correa for a recent sports example. We are an encyclopedia, not a newspaper. We only include sports transactions that are completed (or major situations like Correa's after they're done). – Muboshgu (talk) 18:59, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

More nationality

There's a related discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Basketball Association § Kyrie Irving that you're invited to join to help form a consensus on the topic. —Bagumba (talk) 06:32, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

I'll paste my response from there, here as well. Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style and WP:CONLEVEL: "Consensus among a limited group of editors, at one place and time, cannot override community consensus on a wider scale. For instance, unless they can convince the broader community that such action is right, participants in a WikiProject cannot decide that some generally accepted policy or guideline does not apply to articles within its scope." Per WP:TRIBE and MOS:CITIZEN, his Standing Rock Sioux Tribal citizenship is not a racial term and is not implied by simply being "American". Native tribes are sovereign nations and it's sourced within the article that he's a citizen of that tribal nation. The infobox for NATIONALITY is under the Personal Information heading, not necessarily related to his qualifications of which team he plays basketball. These Wikipedia policies cannot be override by editors in this discussion, it would have to be taken up by as a policy change to all of Wikipedia.  oncamera  (talk page) 06:44, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Protected edit request: religions in categories

Could we please remove "African-American Muslims," "Converts to Islam," and "Muslims from New Jersey" from the categories on this article? Islam is merely one of the many religions Kyrie Irving has variously claimed to adhere to in recent years. More recently than his suggestion to the media that he practiced Islam, Irving has called himself Jewish, 'Omnist,' and an adherent of Native American religions. If we would not label him as Jewish simply based on confused and conflicting quotes to the press, we should not do the same with Islam either.

In the discussion about Irving's 50-40-90 club achievement in the 2020-2021 season, I propose the "percentages", which are not actually percentages, be changed to actual percentages, i.e. '(0.506)' becomes '(50.6%)', etc. Rspears69 (talk) 20:00, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Etymology

Kyrie, a transliteration of Greek Κύριε, vocative case of Κύριος (Kyrios), is a common name of an important prayerof Christian liturgy, also called the Kyrie eleison (/ˈkɪəri.eɪɪˈleɪ.ɪsɒn, -sən/ KEER-ee-ay il-AY-iss-on, -ən; Ancient Greek: Κύριε, ἐλέησον, romanized: Kýrie, eléēson, lit.'Lord, have mercy'). 49.196.209.118 (talk) 00:18, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

Pro Palestine support

Kyrie is known for his pro-Palestinian views, previously expressed public support for the Palestinian struggle against the State of Israel and published in 2021 during Operation "Guardian of the Walls" photos of explosions of buildings in Gaza and condemned on social media the Israeli attacks against the Palestinian people with statements such as: "The Israeli army is shooting at Palestinians in the Al Mosque Aksa", "Solidarity to Gaza" and "Strengthen the Palestinian freedom fighters". Only four days after the October 7th massacre - Irving approached a man who was holding a Palestinian flag in his hands and hugged him demonstratively. Kyrie also wore a Keffiyeh at one of the press conferences in November 2023, about a month after the massacre. In May 2024, he wear a necklace of the map of Israel in the colors of the Palestinian flag. 134.191.232.85 (talk) 11:22, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
