Notable?
[edit]A couple of weeks ago I was wondering if Kevin Jorgeson should have an article. Outside the climbing fraternity it seems he is a WP:SINGLEEVENT person. This is reflected in that only two citations back up this article at present with both being directly related to the recently completed Dawn Wall free climb. I suspect he his notable but the article needs to show that is the case. His web site does not have a page devoted to news coverage but his accomplishments page has a bunch of stuff where it seems there would have been coverage within the climbing community of some of the climbs that could be researched to see if there has been coverage of Jorgeson. --Marc Kupper|talk 21:15, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
- I can spot some books at Google Book predating the climb showing his as a well established free climber, surpassing the BLP1E level. Arguably, the Dawn Wall climb itself is not a single event, since they've been planning since 2008 and have had two previous failures at this. --MASEM (t) 21:54, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
- Masem, can you see any mentions other than trivial? For example, Beal, Peter (2011). Bouldering: Movement, Tactics, and Problem Solving. The Mountaineers Books. has eight mentions. 1) KJ is in a list of climbers, 2-6 and 8) KJ mention in the caption of a photo, and 7) KJ mention in the middle of a sentence.[1] There is never any significant coverage per WP:BIO.
- There was no little to no coverage of the planning and previous attempts other than within the climbing community. This time around coverage started to go mainstream on January 5th including this NYT article which also landed on the NYT home page.
- This Press Democrat news article from December 21, 2014 has several photos captioned with "Santa Rosa native Kevin Jorgeson was featured in the May 2011 issue of National Geographic magazine climbing on Yosemite's El Capitan." That looks promising but unfortunately, KJ is not mentioned in the feature article. He is mentioned in four photo captions from that issue.[2] [3] [4] [5] The National Geographic's search feature says KJ's name also appears on this interactive graphic but I can't spot it. I added the Press Democrat article as a citation as it's a decent one for evidence of notability.
- I suspect KJ is notable per WP:BLP's "The person is regarded as an important figure or is widely cited by peers or successors." but we need to show this and ideally it's better than "the guy's name was used in a photo caption". --Marc Kupper|talk 00:26, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
- Just because the previous failures were only only documented by the climbing sources doesn't make that non-notable - we can use those climbing sources in addition to this attempt (add in that some of these new sources do re-document the previous failures). The NYTimes article says he participated in international climbing contests, so finding assured sources for the specific events would help. --MASEM (t) 02:55, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

What the heck does that supposed to mean? "Jorgeson is known for being able to free climb, using no equipment outside of gear to protect from falling" isn't all rock climbers are 'known' for being able to free climb? I think it's just a typical dawn wall fail journalism outbreak.78.60.91.224 (talk) 19:23, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
I recall plenty of coverage in respectable venues such as Climbing Magazine for previous ascents, especially Ambrosia in 2009. It should be possible to find links. Also, KJ has been featured in several films, e.g. by BigUp Productions, about his first ascents such as at the Grit. It seems that KJ would qualify as eminently "notable" based on wide citation by peers. Avm1 (talk) 04:09, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
