Misleading translation

There is a lot of confussion about the correct translation of the political sense of the world "Comunidad" when referring to Spanish autonomous regions, and I believe that it is worth a discussion: One use of the term is as referring to "Comunidades Autónomas", in constitutional term the right of autonomy is given to "communities" (colectives, groups of people) living in a contiguous territory. So in these cases translation to "Autonomous Communities" is correct. Although for an external observer would be most easily understood as "Autonomous Regions". But when used as the institutions governing such territories, the world "Comunidad" those not refer to Community, it is used as a link to ancient "Comunidades" (organisations of ancient Castilians towns that rebel in the Revolt of the Comuneros in the 16th century) and the more accurate translation should be "Commonwealths". For Spanish people there is only a Commonwealth (the Bristish-lead Commonwealth of Nations) so many reject the term (even if it is in use for the equivalent in some US States etc.). In Castile-la Macha the name "Junta de Comunidades" refers directly to the Revolt of the Comuneros. The "Junta" (Board) was the governing council that aggrupated the different rebel Commonwealths. So the translation "Junta of Communities" is misleading for the name of the regional administration. Moreover when in English "Junta" has an obvious meaning referring to military-led administrations resulting from military-led takeover of legitimate goverments. So, I propose to the leading contributors of Wikipedia to review the use and translations of those terms in this context. In this specific case I would proposed something easier as "Regional Goverment" keeping always "Junta de Comunidades" in Castilian language. Or if needed to provide a translation I would use "United Commonwealths of Castile-la Mancha". Dzamandzar (talk) 08:52, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is a sensible approach, with which I agree. I remember moving this from "Regional Government of Castilla–La Mancha" to the current title, mostly as a matter of consistency across articles as the names were somewhat dispersed. However, I cannot actually find "Junta of Communities" being the WP:COMMONNAME in English sources (with most rather using "Government" or "Regional Government"). Regional Government of Andalusia and Government of Extremadura seem to use this approach (though it's somewhat confusing the choice between "Government" and "Regional Government"), whereas Junta of Castile and León and Xunta de Galicia do not use it. – WP:COMMONNAME establishes that articles should use the "name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable, English-language sources)". Currently, there is a situation in which names for articles on regional administrations in Spain use various, differing names that do not exactly conform to COMMONNAME: the Castilla–La Mancha is frequently referred to as "Regional Government" by such sources ([1] [2]), with no source other than those based on the en.wiki using "Junta of Communities"; the same happens to Castile and León ("Regional Government" rather than "Junta", [3] [4] [5]); Galicia ("Regional Government" as opposed to "Xunta", [6] [7] [8] [9]; note that President of the Regional Government of Galicia already uses the English common name); and, to some degree, Extremadura (the current title uses "Government", but the word "Junta" is typically translated into "Regional Government", [10] [11] [12]; as well as the addition of "Regional" adding consistency with the other articles as well as with President of the Regional Government of Extremadura and Regional Government of Andalusia). The aims of this RM are to 1) seek conformity of these articles' names (and related articles) with COMMONNAME, and 2) harmonize the names of institutions named similarly in their original languages but depicted in various different ways in the en.wiki, despite no clear exception to WP:ENGLISHTITLE applying.
