Redirect to disambiguation page
[edit]I made this page a redirect to the disambiguation page Joshua tree (disambiguation). I did so after I disambiguated incoming links to this page (see Talk:Joshua tree (disambiguation)#Requested move), because this page accumulates incoming links intended for several articles listed there. Because most incoming links do not intend Joshua tree or Yucca brevifolia, it is not appropriate to redirect this page to either of those pages. --Una Smith (talk) 00:20, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
- Now that the move request has been closed, shall we point this redirect to The Joshua Tree? -- JHunterJ (talk) 19:41, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- I would not. Most incoming links here intended to link to the plant. The next greatest number intended Joshua Tree, California. Only a very few intended the U2 album. See Talk:Joshua Tree (disambiguation)#Requested move to Joshua Tree Comments for details. Station1 (talk) 04:31, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I know of the requested move. Internal wikilinks are only one metric. Traffic is another, and whether readers who type "Joshua Tree" in the search box are divined to be looking for the plant or the album. Based on the earlier discussions, I believe one of the points was that they'd be looking for the album. -- JHunterJ (talk) 12:02, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, that's true. Both are considerations. People who type in Joshua Tree (capital T) may well be looking for the album. There's already a Joshua Tree Album redirect. Maybe it might make sense to create a "Joshua Tree (album)" redirect as well so it appears earlier on the dropdown list. You could also make the case that it should redirect to the town because that's the only article that would be titled "Joshua Tree" (capital T, no "the") except for the naming convention for U.S. towns. Either way, it's not that big a deal as long as the album article has an appropriate redirect hatnote. Station1 (talk) 00:10, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

- Point of clarification. I disambiguated the incoming links to both Joshua tree and Joshua Tree. Most links to Joshua tree (lowercase) intended the plant (or the habitat type). Most links to Joshua Tree (uppercase) intended the place name, the park name, or the song/album/group; most links to Joshua Tree did not intend the plant. --Una Smith (talk) 19:12, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
