I believe the genealogy of the Speed family is off-topic per WP:NOT. A link to a genealogical web site is sufficient (except maybe for a brief mention of John Speed the mapmaker, since he seems to have his own entry.) However I'm pretty new and I don't want to be a clueless newbie, so I wanted to open it up for comment before I deleted anything. Thatcher131 05:03, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Sex with Lincoln

I removed a few of the more offensive sentences that appear to be simply one editor's attempt to recast the entire argument. I would suggest finding a citation that affirms the removed points so we can all check that the statements are in fact accurate. Thanks. Wjhonson 06:06, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

He didn't have any sex with Lincoln he only slept in the same bed with him since Lincoln didn't have much money to pay for anything of his own so Joshua decided to be nice to him and let him to share his bed with Lincoln.
So you guys who want to read anything dirty about them this is not the place hun.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:6C40:5DF0:7160:2864:BBE0:2C80:E47A (talk)

Story of Lincoln and Speed's meeting and rooming together

It seems to me that while some of the previous content regarding their meeting and rooming together was overwrought, it also seems extreme to remove all mention of it. Could this material be worked back in somehow? The linked article by Bryan Bush (who is coming out with the book "Lincoln and the Speeds") contains info on their meeting and friendship. I would suggest a rewrite regarding that. While I do not doubt their meeting and friendship, suggesting that they had an intimate encounter and then eluding to that later by making many references to that is pushing it, IMO. seicer | talk | contribs 21:22, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
I was hoping that since you did the removal, you could take a stab at it. There's a hole in the article right now, and I don't have the available time to fill it. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 17:30, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm doing a write up on Abraham Lincoln as part of my trip to the Lincoln Museum in Hodgenville, and I will take a stab at this article probably in a few days or next week. I'm pretty busy until Thursday evening. seicer | talk | contribs 17:47, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Has anyone found any more solid info on this Lincoln/Speed bed sharing, because the insinuation is fairly bright and arguably extreme without proper evidence. Two men sleeping in the same bed together for four years definitely raises flags, but even more so when cast in the light that Lincoln was somehow mired in conflicting feelings when he cancels his wedding engagement at the same time he learns his sleeping buddy is moving home... Hearsay

The mention of Larry Kramer suggested homosexual realtionship is "hearsay", until authenicated and should be removed. This type of ability by fame in a name claiming something they will not share dilutes credability to all parties involved in this wiki post and monitoring. DWG59 (talk) 02:44, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

It is referenced, and a notable piece of information about this subject. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 04:01, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
Notable? In what possible way. The entire thing is a hoax. The "references" you state only prove that it was a hoax. That's not notable to the subject, that's confirmation to the content and Larry Kramer. It doesn't belong here. Once you open that can, it welcomes any and all. I say: remove. Should I add this, it would seem that scholarly opinion has shifted

The line " Joshua Fry Speed is considered by most scholars to be Lincoln's soul mate, " might be in order.

Plagiarism?

Some passages in Section 1.4, "Lincoln and Speed," appear to have been lifted without attribution from a 1999 Slate article by Carol Lloyd. For instance, in the second paragraph,

This entry reads, "Lincoln, though notoriously awkward and shy around women, was at the time engaged to Mary Todd, a vivacious, if temperamental, society girl, also from Kentucky."

Lloyd's text reads, "Lincoln, who was notoriously awkward and shy around women, was at the time engaged to a vivacious, if temperamental, society girl named Mary Todd."

A few sentences later, the Wikipedia entry reads, "Speed departed as planned soon after, leaving Lincoln mired in depression and guilt."

Lloyd's text reads, "Speed departed as planned soon after, leaving Lincoln mired in depression and guilt."

Lloyd's article is cited as a source for this entry, but not for this section. This raises major questions of credit and integrity. Mgllama (talk) 21:20, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
