Requested move 7 October 2024
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: no consensus. There appears to be no consensus for a move to the proposed target. Some editors instead proposed a revert back to the prior disambiguating title, but that was opposed about equally, which after several weeks of discussion leaves us at no consensus, so the status quo remains for now. John Reilly (actor, born 1934) → John Reilly (soap opera actor) – Year of birth is not preferable to this more natural modifier. According to WP:NCPDAB, failing a practical single qualifier, the disambiguator can be expanded with a second qualifier ... Years of birth and death are not normally used as disambiguators, as readers are more likely to be seeking this information than to already know it.
Most of his obituaries introduce him as something like "veteran soap opera actor" or "longtime soap star". (I would alternatively support moving back to John Reilly (actor); the page was boldly moved to the current title in 2021, ostensibly to disambiguate from John C. Reilly, who is always credited with a middle initial.) Hameltion (talk | contribs) 20:11, 7 October 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. Alpha3031 (t • c) 15:15, 21 October 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. - Revert back to John Reilly (actor). John C. Reilly is not known as John Reilly. 162 etc. (talk) 20:41, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
- Revert back to John Reilly (actor), which has always redirected back here anyway. The hatnote takes care of any possible confusion. Station1 (talk) 04:29, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose reverting back. John C. Reilly gets 10x as many views as this article does, and of course middle initials can reasonably be omitted with referring to people. John Reilly (actor) should redirect to the disambiguation page. No opinion on whether to rename to (soap opera actor). * Pppery * it has begun... 20:35, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- Revert back to John Reilly (actor), the initial is a NATURAL disambiguator here I think.--Ortizesp (talk) 14:14, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. Keep as it is. John C. Reilly is still called John Reilly! And we very much do use years of birth as disambiguators. On thousands of articles. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:38, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- John C. Reilly is still called John Reilly: {{citation needed}}. Not in any RS that I can find... Plenty of people think the hatnote suffices, and it was your undiscussed move that added the year.
- Good grief. His name is still John Reilly, whether he has a middle initial or not! Is this not patently obvious? -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:49, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Yes. The point is that he's never called that, and we don't need an overprecise title. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 18:13, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

- we very much do use years of birth as disambiguators: almost entirely for athletes though. It's not nearly so common for US actors, and there's an easy alternative which WP:NCPDAB, quoted above, says is preferred. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 17:33, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, but this is utter rubbish. We use YOB disambiguators on many articles. Did John Reilly only appear in soap operas? No, he most certainly did not, so the proposed disambiguator is a terrible one. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:49, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Almost all sources cited describe him specifically as a soap opera actor even if he was also in other things, e.g.,
Veteran soap opera actor John Reilly, who also provided the voice for Clint Barton/Hawkeye ...
in CBR. I know you personally like using year of birth, but our guidelines describe as it as a last resort. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 18:13, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

- Specifically when it comes to actors: The Screen Actors Guild requires a unique name. So the initials in John C. Reilly, Michael J. Fox, et al., are quite intentional. See here. 162 etc. (talk) 18:03, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
